Lecter's patient Franklin Froideveaux worries that his friend Tobias may be a psychopath, but Franklin's growing obsession with Lecter is what concerns the latter more. Graham investigates the murder of a Baltimore musician who had his throat opened and a cello neck inserted through his mouth. Graham, with Lecter's guidance, interprets this as one killer serenading another. Graham's mental stability deteriorates further when he begins having auditory hallucinations of animals in pain and when his romantic feelings for Alana Bloom are rejected.

A nurse at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane is brutally murdered by a patient, Dr. Abel Gideon, in a manner reminiscent of the "Chesapeake Ripper", who hasn't committed a murder in two years, the same number of years Gideon has been incarcerated. 2017.09.25 12:30 K_S_Morgan The Story of How Hannigram Became Canon to Those Who Are in Doubt

This post is mostly meant for the casual viewers who I noticed have joined Hannibal Subreddit after the news about the S4 negotiations. It is great that we are growing in numbers, but there seems to be a misunderstanding in regard to Hannigram (the romantic relationship between Will and Hannibal) and people who ship this pairing.
Hannigram is not a fanon pairing. It is not ‘just in the heads’ of silly girls or overly-romantic viewers. It is a canonically acknowledged couple that is supported massively by the cast and Bryan Fuller. Furthermore, this romance is the essence of the show, because Will and Hannibal find everything in each other. No, their relationship is not based merely on romance or sexual attraction. But also no, a more explicit romance in S4, which seems very likely and has been hinted at many times, will not destroy the complexity of the relationship. It will add to it.
The first part is canon evidence of Hannigram season by season. The second part of this huge post is tweets, quotes, and photos with Bryan and cast in regard to Hannigram. (Sorry, I can't seem to break the post in parts for easier reading, the formatting links don't work here for some reason.)
Season 1 is obviously the most ambiguous one in this regard because the relationship only starts to develop. And yes, the majority of scenes can be interpreted as the blossoming friendship, because it is a friendship first and foremost. Even several rather romantic moments can be technically classified as such — but only if you ignore the looks that Will and Hannibal give each other and the later narrative. Still, this is all ambiguous at this stage.
When Hannibal offers Will to take care of Abigail, he repeatedly calls them her “fathers”. Not “uncles” or “caretakers” or any other option — fathers, and while this word by itself might not mean much, it is clearly supposed to hint at what kind of relationship is going to unite Will and Hannibal in the future. In 1.07, Will doesn’t come to the appointment and Hannibal is pining. It is a very powerful and explicit scene, with Hannibal slowly walking to his chair, checking his calendar to make sure Will had to come, touching the phone longingly, then abruptly making a decision and going to look for him. All of this is accompanied by the corresponding music. Is this scene romantic? Some may see it this way, some may disagree. But I think most will agree that such obvious pining is a common romantic trope that's often shown in media. The focus and the way the scene is presented are everything: they didn't just show that Will didn't come and that Hannibal decided to find him. No, we had a slow focus on all his hesitant actions and his longing for contact. In any way, at this stage, it is no longer a mere friendship. It goes deeper, to the point where Hannibal can’t stand not knowing where Will is and craving contact enough to drive for hours in the search for him.
Once again in 1.07, Will brings Hannibal a bottle of wine out of blue and acts awkwardly and shyly when declining the invitation to join the dinner party. We don’t know why Will did it and it is never addressed again, but I think everyone will agree that bringing a bottle of wine to another person for no reason and just for him has a rather romantic shade.
Then, in that same scene, Will claims he can’t stay because he has ‘a date with a Chesapeake Ripper’. It is a joke, of course, but once again, it’s fiction. The word choice is very deliberate, and Bryan loves to foreshadow the upcoming events.
In 1.08, Will drives an hour in the snow to tell Hannibal about the kiss with Alana and Hannibal exhibits a very controlled jealousy, making a snarky comment about the long drive and telling Will that he had been motivated not by attraction, but by the need to find a balance.
In 1.09, Hannibal calls him and Will Abigail’s fathers again and touches his shoulder. Yes, it is ambiguous, but when (especially) you know what’s coming, you can’t help but notice how this touch is too hesitant and fragile for a mere gesture of friendship and unity. I’ll just say, even my father caught up on it right away, which is saying something.
These are the most explicit things I recall from season 1. Now, season 2 is way more direct.
Many scenes of Hannibal pining, sitting with a glass of wine and staring at Will’s chair at his time of appointments is a common romantic trope. Yes, it can be interpreted in different ways — for example, Will has already become a part of Hannibal and Hannibal misses him as the person who has the power to understand him. However, I feel like I have to emphasize the fact that it cannot be the only reason. Hannibal has already met people with extreme empathy before, such as Pazzi. He has also met people who were happy to join him and who had similar mindset, as Tobias Budge. Hannibal wasn’t interested in them, but he’s interested in Will. Will is special because he is himself, and like Hannibal will say later, love either pays you a visit or it does not. It clearly did with Will.
Soon after Will is released from prison, he goes to Hannibal to start the implementation of his and Jack’s plan. What does he choose to do? He dresses up and polishes himself up, presenting himself to Hannibal in the way that we have never seen him before. The first thought that comes to mind is ‘seduction’. Consciously or unconsciously, Will makes himself look as attractive as possible.
In 2.08, Hannibal touches Will’s face and holds it, staring into his eyes. This is romantic. It is one of the most popular romantic tropes that ever existed. ‘Transcendent’ love doesn’t require this kind of very intimate touch to be displayed. More than that, things become very dangerous here because if there had been no explicit follow-up, Bryan would have been accused of queerbaiting. Fortunately, it wasn’t the case.
In 2.09, Will has a dream where Hannibal directly calls him his ‘beloved’ several times. In 2.10, Hannibal treats Will’s hands very gently and we get camera focusing on it thoroughly. It is a deliberate depiction of eroticism that's often used in romances to create and underline romantic and/or sexual tension. In the same episode, we have a beautiful sex scene, seemingly between Hannibal and Alana and Will and Margot. However, it is there to show a very intimate and all-encompassing connection that is developing between Will and Hannibal, and it is structured this way specifically. Will reaches orgasm when he sees the Wendigo, a reflection of Hannibal. The words used before, like Hannibal's words about "never touching", are said to Alana but put on the image of Will.
Alana notices the shift in this relationship and asks Will and Hannibal about it. They talk about “crossing boundaries” and the fact that they “know where we are with each other”, and Alana clearly remains suspicious. In the end of the episode, Will and Hannibal have an intimate dinner full of lingering glances.
In 2.11, the episode starts with the eating of ortolans, which has being pointed out as an allusion to blowjob by the creator) If you have missed it, just re-watch this scene again with this in mind. It is very explicit, to the point of being uncomfortable. Hannibal’s reaction to learning that Margot is pregnant from Will is to hint Mason about it, thus endangering her and her child. Granted, he seems to genuinely regret it, but the deed is done. It is a jealous and possessive reaction, which has been further confirmed by Mads. During the con, he said: "If Margot had Will’s baby, it would be very hard for Hannibal to get over it. He’d be jealous and very grumpy." In this same episode, Alana looks at the burnt ‘Shiva’ that Hannibal has left for Will and calls it a ‘courtship’. So, we get the explicit confirmation that Hannibal is courting Will. And no, he isn’t courting an emerging killer in Will because at this point, he thinks that Will has already embraced his potential by killing Randall and Freddie and eating her. To Hannibal’s mind, Will is almost ready, but he is too lovesick to stop. Can you imagine him digging up the corpse of ‘Freddie’, decorating it, and displaying like that? It’s hilariously romantic — in a dark way.
In 2.12, Will chooses Hannibal by freeing him from the trap and then not giving him up to Jack after he mutilates Mason. Hannibal draws a fanart (!) of himself and Will as Achilles and Patroclus. For those who don’t know, these two are popular examples of lovers. This isn't just friendship. The reference to Achilles and Patroclus is often used to hint at a romance, it's a popular trope as well.
In 2.13, Hannibal talks about ‘imago’, an image of a loved one, and then says that he and Will have an image of each other and offers him to run away. Two men running away together to reunite with their daughter is romantic. Will chooses Hannibal once again by calling him, but it is too late. We get a heartbreakingly tender and intimate touch between them before the stabbing. As Mads said, "Will is the light of Hannibal's life and Hannibal killed Abigail to break Will's heart the way he broke his." Just as he said that "Hannibal was blinded by love."
Season 3 is where all subtext is taken into text. Hannibal has chosen Bedelia as a substitute to Will, and note how many people believe they become lovers. So, why Will and Hannibal running away is platonic, but Hannibal doing the same with Bedelia is not? Even though when the only person he does love is Will. We see that he is dissatisfied with Bedelia and is growing restless.
In 3.01, we get a flashback to Gideon who teases/mocks Hannibal by saying, ‘If only that company could be Will Graham’. So, in the very limited interactions, even he managed to glimpse the attraction, because let’s be honest, he didn’t have time to understand all deep layers of this relationship, but his phrase has been included deliberately.
In this episode, Hannibal meets Anthony, practically a Will mirror. He looks similarly, is smart, sassy, and he is even enthusiastic about Hannibal’s crimes. Ideally, he is everything Hannibal has wanted. But what does he do? He kills Anthony and turns him into a Valentine heart for Will. Before that, he makes an example of the heart from Da Vinci’s ‘perfect man’. In 3.02, Will recognizes it as such and calls it a Valentine and a ‘broken heart’. He asks himself, “Do I still want to go with him?”, and answers, “Yes”.
In 3.03, we get the first ‘in love’ confirmation. Hannibal is shaken after seeing Will and hearing his words of forgiveness. When talking about him with Bedelia, Bedelia says, “Betrayal and forgiveness are best seen as something akin to falling in love”, and Hannibal replies, “You can’t control with respect to whom you fall in love”. The longing for Will has made Hannibal reckless, and Bedelia notices it by mentioning that he is going to get caught with this kind of behavior. In the end of the episode, Hannibal once again says that Will makes him feel love. He adds, “Love. He pays you a visit or he doesn’t.” Which love can either come to a person or not? Technically, these words could be interpreted as platonic love, but in the beginning of this very episode, we got a confirmation that the nature of this love is romantic. Will, in turn, is still reverent about Hannibal and even travels to his home to find out more about him. His attitude changes when he sees Chiyoh, who he sees as another toy abandoned by Hannibal, and it brings back the insecurities. We see it through how often Will compares himself and Chiyoh and how he is filled with anger and bitterness again (which were absent before this meeting). Chiyoh sees right through him and repeatedly states that Will is wrong to compare them, but Will persists.
In 3.04, we see that Will spends a lot of time sitting in Hannibal’s house, which is yet another romantic trope. Even Alana knows where to find him. Will admits to Jack that he “wanted to run away with Hannibal”, which also has a romantic connotation. Before that, Will was making the boat that he later uses to come and find Hannibal. This scene is intercut with his Mizumono memories, namely, with Hannibal's face that emerges every time he moves yet another part of the engine. This is a vivid demonstration of Will trying to repair what is now broken. He also literally sails after Hannibal, which is considered extremely romantic by many tropes at once. Chilton calls Will and Hannibal’s interactions a “flirtation” in this episode.
In 3.05, when discussing what to do with Hannibal, Chiyoh says, “I told you, there are means of influence other than violence” and kisses Will, thus showing him what others means exist. It is yet another direct allusion to the romantic part of Will and Hannibal’s relationship because Chiyoh basically offers him to kiss Hannibal instead of trying to kill him.
In 3.06, Hannibal says the famous, ”If I saw you every day, forever, Will, I would remember this time”. He said the same words to Clarice in the books shortly before having sex with her. It is an utterly romantic phrase that just cannot have any other meaning, especially when you count the narrative and the source material. Will adds some more romantic phrases, like “We are conjoined, I wonder if either of us can survive separation.” Such level of love is incredible, but you don’t say things like that to a person who you feel can just understand you. Nor to a simple friend or a spiritual mentor. It’s everything at once, especially when coming from Will. Things go badly after that and we get a knife and a drill. Scenes in Mason’s house are great and show that Will and Hannibal could be a great team. Hannibal saves Will and carries him home bridal-style. He changes his clothes, puts him into bed, and waits for him to wake up while writing down formulas that could change the time and erase some of the events. When Will wakes up, Hannibal admits that he has discovered Will in his Mind Palace, victorious, thus giving the power into his hands. When Will rejects him (by saying he’s not going to miss him), Hannibal gives himself up, knowing that chances are, he will never get back to freedom and he will never see Will again. Prison is the ultimate act of love because Hannibal is helpless there, completely on Will’s mercy. As Mads said during the con, "Will forgetting him was the last thing Hannibal wanted to hear, so that’s why he surrendered. The only way Will would see him again is if he’s in jail, and he would eventually visit. He was afraid he’d never see Will again otherwise."
3 years pass and we see that Will has a family. But — surprise! He is unhappy. He doesn’t even go fishing with them to have some time for himself. He hides the letter from Hannibal and goes to read it in the middle of the night. He never returns Molly’s ‘I love you’, never attempts to touch her, can’t even keep up a conversation with her, and literally sees himself falling to pieces. At the earliest opportunity, he jumps at the chance to see Hannibal. He didn’t have to do it. We are shown that he has recreated the crime scene perfectly, better than ever before, but Will lies to Jack about it and asks to see Hannibal.
In 3.09, we have a very powerful scene of Hannibal and Will reuniting, exchanging long sorrowful and heartbroken gazes. Hannibal says, “I gave you a child”, which puts him and Will in a category of parents again. He says that Will has chosen a ready-made family and Will doesn’t argue. We get a “Murder Husbands” reference from Freddie.
In 3.10, Will seeks Bedelia out. He acts catty and jealous. Bedelia calls him “Hannibal’s bride”, and calls Will out on visiting Hannibal just because he missed him, which Will doesn’t deny. He is confident and snarky at those scenes, using every opportunity to cut into Bedelia for having a relationship with Hannibal and surviving it in even better shape than he did. Bedelia says, “My relationship with Hannibal is not as passionate as yours”, and then adds: “You are here visiting old flame. Is your wife aware of how intimately you and Hannibal know each other?” They literally place Hannibal on the same level as Will’s wife. Then we have, “Your experience of Hannibal’s attention is so profoundly harmful yet so irresistible, it undermines your ability to think rationally.”
In 3.11, Hannibal sends Francis after Molly and Walter. Will doesn’t really comfort them, we see clearer than ever what a wedge exists between them. Hannibal asks, “How is the wife?”, which is another display of blatant jealousy. Will gets it, and he can’t deny the truth any longer.
In 3.12, we have the exchange that should have settled the debates about romantic part of relationship once and for all. Bedelia compares herself and Will to Hannibal/Bluebeard’s wives, and mentions how she would have preferred to be the last — the one that Will is. Will asks, “Is Hannibal in love with me?”, and Bedelia replies, “Could he daily feel a stab of hunger for you, and find nourishment at the very sight of you? Yes. But do you ache for him?” Will’s look and his silence speak volumes as everything fades to black slowly. This is it, the textually explicit confirmation. Fans didn’t come up with the idea that Will and Hannibal are in love, it was stated directly on screen, several times.
Shortly before the confession, Bedelia says, "It excites him, knowing that you marked in this particular way." Personally, I always felt some sexual subtext in this phrase, and it is confirmed when we regard the similar scene in the book. Clarice gets sperm on her face and these same words sound. Granted, the situations are very different, but it proves that the phrase does indeed have sexual connotations, and it was deliberately planned like this.
Will devises a complicated and deadly plan after this. He sets up Chilton, which can be seen as courting gift to Hannibal, and in 3.13, he lies to everyone to break Hannibal out of prison. Bedelia calls him out on it once again, saying, "Can't live with him. Can't live without him." Will doesn't deny it - he confirms it. When Hannibal says he'll agree to the plan if Will says 'please', Will does it - in an obviously flirting way. Hannibal calls him a 'cunning boy', which is once again obvious flirting, especially considering the way he says it. His plan results in the deaths of numerous officers, but Hannibal is free. We have another romantic trope where Hannibal pretends that Will is a hitchhiker and asks if he’s going his way. In the house, they have another loaded conversation where Will admits that he doesn’t think he can save itself, and that it’s fine.
Predictably, Will can’t handle seeing Hannibal killed, so he reaches for his gun. We know the rest. At the cliff, Will finally accepts the truth, and he gives the fate a chance to stop both of them or to set them free. They fall into the ocean under the Love Crime song, and since the water symbolizes reborn, we can guess what happens after that.
Post-credits scene indicates that Will and Hannibal have paid a visit to Bedelia and are in the process of eating her while she’s hiding the fork to stab one of them as he approaches. The deleted epilogue to the series shows that they are in perfect harmony now.")
Who's too lazy to read all of that, you can just check the quotes below and watch some fan videos where direct lines from canon are presented. My two favorites:
Crazy in love
Initially, during S1, Bryan said he wanted to explore the idea of “heterosexual male friendship”. However, he later admitted that he was worried about negative homosexual stereotypes surrounding the imbalance in power in the relationship between Will and Hannibal, and in the podcast due to the beginning of American Gods, he confessed that he “wanted to approach “Hannibal” from the angle that no one has explored before — the angle of romance”.
During the airing of S2-S3, and beyond, Bryan was the one who pointed out romantic and even sexual subtext, and promoted Hannigram further. The cliff scene is officially labeled as "Kiss_alts".

To the question of whether explicit Hannigram was a part of the initial plan, Bryan Fuller stated: "No, it naturally evolved because I guess I was absorbing so much of Mads and Hugh's performance, which felt like it was growing in intimacy, and it would have been inauthentic not to address it. Because all of these characters, and particularly Bedelia, was able to call out what she had witnessed [between Hannibal and Will], it seemed like a natural conclusion. I remember when I turned in the rewrite pages where Will asks Bedelia if Hannibal is in love with him, I got a note from Don Mancini, one of our writers who was always pushing for more homosexual text – not just context or subtext but text, text, text – and he was like, "I'm so glad you put that in there! They said it! They said it!"
Discussing what motivated him to verbally acknowledge the romance between Will and Hannibal, Fuller mentioned: "It felt like we had to s–t or get off the pot, ultimately, because there had been so much going on between these two men that when Will asks, "Is Hannibal Lecter in love with me?" it is very much about death and the romance between these two men. There is a quality to connections that go above and beyond sexuality. You can have this intimate connection with somebody that then causes you to wonder where the lines of your own sexuality are. And we didn't quite broach the sexuality. It was certainly suggested, but the love is absolutely on the table."
Remembering how the song for the finale of the series was created, Fuller said: "It was interesting. She [Siouxsie Sioux] was like, "I want to write this song, and what are the things I should really be thinking about?" And I was like, "this is a love story. A love story between a full-fledged psychopath and someone who has nascent psychopathic abilities." Actually, Hannibal Lecter is not a psychopath; he's something else entirely. But it's a love relationship between two men: one of them is a cannibal, and one of them understands those cannibalistic instincts all too well."
Bryan Fuller: "Clarice never, until the end of Hannibal, submitted to that romance, whereas Will seemed to be on a slippery slope right from the beginning, so there's a contrast to be drawn between them."
Bryan in the commentary: "“After killing Francis Dolarhyde with Hannibal Lecter, he realizes this is exactly what Hannibal Lecter has wanted all along. He has wanted a partner in crime - a murder husband, as it were - and the sad truth of it all is that Hannibal was right. Will did enjoy it. Will thought it was a beautiful, powerful thing."
Hugh during PaleyFest 2014 (prior to S3): "They are in love or they love each other, that's unquestionable. I think it's a platonic love... but it's rich in... (audience and cast laughs) Ok, we've done two seasons so far... so platonic love and they recognize each other as unique in the world, they reflect each other in a way, it's like profound recognition and relief that comes with it. And they are good looking guys." Mads agrees: "Exactly. Losing him or what Hannibal did with him in the two seasons is probably the closest he has ever been to loving anyone. And what love means in his universe we have to see later on. But it's heartbreaking everything that happens to poor Will is also heartbreaking for Hannibal."
Hugh: You could say that during the second half [of season three]-I mean, obviously we’re jumping ahead here, but Will comes back to Hannibal. He’s now got this family, and Will, independently and pretty quickly, starts coming to the conclusion that it’s not sustainable for him to have that family. Like, he’s not the guy. He’s not the right person to be able to look after them, to live with them. It’s not compatible with who he really is. And you could argue that Hannibal is just driving him more quickly to come to that realization. So in that sense, it is kind of brutal, tough love. His love is saying, “Know thyself.” Mads: As Hugh is saying, it’s unavoidable. It’s going to happen sooner or later. Might as well happen sooner, before he’s stuck. [Interview]
Prior to S3. Mads: I recently watched the whole second season back to back, and I was really impressed by how what is basically a horror show becomes a romance.
Mads Mikkelsen on ‘Which scene has been the defining moment?'
"Probably one of the moments early on, maybe mid first season, where I spend some quality time in therapy session with Hugh and he’s flying away thinking about something and I have the chance, Hannibal has the chance, to watch him. And he becomes very warm watching him. He sees not only this brilliant person but he sees something he loves. I think that is the definition of Hannibal." []
Bryan and Hugh discussing Will's motivation in TWOTL at the cliff and beyond (in the commentary to S3):
Hugh: The point was that it wasn't the horror that drove Will to do this, the horror was secondary, it was a horror in reaction to how much he loved what happened between him and Hannibal. We have seen so many moments of Will is covered in blood and shaking and horrified and this moment he suddenly realizes it is his true self.
Bryan: I remember the day you shot the closeups, you both came running to me and I remember Mads was particularly giddy, giddy as a schoolgirl, he said we really went for it, we really went for the love story, we almost kissed and it's all there and you can use it.
Hugh: We had to push in that direction so that there is no point pretending otherwise.
About Bedelia's leg:
Bryan: The false interpretation is she cut her leg which is a crazier version of Bedelia than I understand. Of course the intention is they survived and there are three place settings."
Hugh, answering the question what is happening to Will and Hannibal now: "Let's just say they're on a beach somewhere. [Interviewer] Just chilling on a beach? [Dancy] Yeah, just chilling on a beach. Drinking something out of a coconut. Or a skull."
Also, the reports from people who visited one of the cons mentioned the following."Today at Red Dragon Con it was announced by Mads that Hannibal and Will are now married, have dogs which he calls “the ugly carpets” of the relationship, and live in seclusion for 4 years before hunting together." Regardless of whether it is going to come to fruition or not, this is how Mads imagines Will and Hannibal's life Post Fall.
Mads in May 2018:
"“I think that Hannibal and Will… they’re not really alive without each other. They are a piece of the puzzle for the other one’s soul.”
A great video where Mads talks about Hannibal and his feelings in S2 final.
Question: Was Hannibal suspicious of Will before he smelled Freddie Lounds or was he completely clueless about it at that point?
Mads: Hannibal doesn't have a masterplan. He's living from day to day and he's seeing possibilities and opportunities, and one of them is Will Graham, who he is obviously in love with, in a certain way - that way. But I think at that time, Hannibal has been blinded by Will Graham. He believes truly that he will walk down the path with the light, hand in hand, with Will - and Abigail. That's his dream, that's what he wants, and I think it does surprise him and it does break his heart. It is a turning point for Hannibal when he becomes the cleaning man instead of the man who loves. Until then, he'd been a man full of love, and after that, I think he is... slightly angry. It was a surprise for him. He was tricked. He got blinded by love.
Interesting interview bit:
IGN: Reba’s final scene was another where you got to really pull direct quotes from the book. But here, I was reading it as Will can also be projecting about himself, as he talks about what it might be like to have a serial killer in love with you. Was that in your mind too, given you had these great quotes from the book but that it could definitely be maybe be a bit more of an echo here, given the situation.?
Fuller: Oh, absolutely. It was a great synchronicity of events where everything that Will was saying to Reba in the novel actually applies to Will Graham in the television series. So there was the want of seeing that scene because I haven’t seen it in any of the adaptations where we get to see Reba, post all of this, and have a quiet moment between the two people who were in love with serial killers.
Bryan: "My ship is canon" (
Bryan about Will and Hannibal's relationship: "Will accepts who Hannibal is. It’s also narcissistic, in the way that we fall in love with people who make us feel better about ourselves and who make us feel like we’re a better version of ourselves. That makes us feel more secure in our bodies, in the dysmorphia of who you are on the inside versus who you project on the outside. That disconnect narrows dramatically when somebody sees you, understands you, accepts you and loves you. It’s transcendent." (
Bryan about Will's reasons for jumping, surviving, and attacking Bedelia with Hannibal: "I think one of the reasons it seemed so organic for Will to go over the cliff with Hannibal at the end was that, in his mind, as he understood the universe in his world, he had peaked. It’s also stopping a monster and stopping himself from becoming a monster, but I think part of him was thinking, “That was beautiful. I don’t think I can do that again and feel as high as I do now.” Everything overwhelmed him and he went over that cliff because there was an apex to his experience, in a way that was poetic and dramatic. ... The kind of suicide where somebody jumps off a bridge, part of them hopes they survive and part of them wants to be over. I think a lot of people are hoping for some percentage of survival that may change them because they’re looking for change within themselves. So, I think there was some bit of that. For the ending with Gillian [Anderson], there are two place settings for a reason." (
Bryan about Will and Hannibal's relationship in S1: The relationship between Will and Hannibal in this first season is the seduction. It is Hannibal Lecter recognizing in Will Graham for the first time in anyone that he has ever encountered in his life the opportunity for a friendship, a real friendship, because he sees something in Will Graham that he also sees in himself. They are both unique in their crazy.
Hugh about the start of Will and Hannibal's relationship: "It’s an instant love between them, it is as if Will met not the best chess player in the world, but the only absolute, the only person he can play with, that enters in the room - or rather, in his life - with a chessboard in hand, and this provokes in him a pleasure and an incredible relief. When we find Will at the beginning of the second season, he was betrayed and thrown in jail, so he is not in a really enviable situation, but the connection he had with Hannibal has remained unchanged, it is something which he can not get rid of. This time, however, he manipulates their connection because Hannibal still needs him and their friendship, but beyond the practical utility must be said that the bond with Hannibal is, even for Will, a source of uncontrolled, involuntary pleasure.”
Mads about the start of relationship: "Hannibal sees an opportunity in this young man. And so he can hopefully, one day, walk hand in hand down the road of life."
Mads during S1: "When he sees Will, he recognizes himself to a degree. [Hannibal] has empathy, but [he] uses it as a tool; Will has empathy, but he doesn’t know what to do with it. Lecter sees an opportunity to open this man’s eyes and see his full potential realized. And he also sees the opportunity for a friend, which is probably not what he’s had too many of. Even though Hannibal is the puppeteer, he really loves Will."
Bryan: "The tricky thing with this show is that it is a story about two men and their relationship. But if it were just about male point of views, it wouldn’t be interesting. I feel like we haven’t done as good of a job, in Season 2, of representing the female characters and their point of view of the world. I think there’s a greater opportunity in Season 3 to do that, and do more of that. In Season 2, we knew the story was about these two guys, and everybody else around them were pawns. Jack Crawford was a pawn. Alana Bloom was a pawn. It was all about what was between Hannibal and Will Graham."
Bryan after S1 was released:
Interviewer: So, is [Hannibal] punishing Will [by framing him]?
Bryan: I think that everything that Hannibal has done to Will has been a radical, unorthodox form of therapy. I would argue that all of the deeds still come from a place of genuine care. He is trying to help Will see himself better and get to a truer version of who Hannibal thinks Will is. Even setting him up to take the fall for these murders has been an act of therapy, in Hannibal's mind.
Interviewer: Is Hannibal's obsession with Will also an attempt to more fully understand himself?
Bryan: Hannibal's absolutely on a journey of self-exploration, and he's fascinated by his fascination with Will. He is curious about this change that's come over him. It's sort of like somebody who is falling in love for the first time and had never felt that was actually a possibility for them. That's a fresh, unexplored territory for Hannibal that is exciting to him and interesting to him. Maybe his ultimate downfall is his attraction and affection for Will Graham.
Bryan about S4: I'm still hoping for more Murder Husband adventures!
NBC post made after the show was cancelled thanking the audience. The tags are very informative (I'll provide some of them): #you are the Bella to our Jack#the Margot to our Alana #and the Will to our Hannibal# sorry we meant the Murder Husband to our Murder Husband #nakamas always remember that you can find us when you wade into the quiet of the stream#or we can just run away to Europe together #won’t that trip cost an arm and Bedelia’s leg though? And the final ones: #so we will leave you this: #JK we're ending it here:#Hannigram is real# *drops mic*
Tweet from Tom Deville, one of the show writers: This is an astonishing piece of writing on Hannibal's queer legacy from @themeatispeople. I can confirm that in the season 3 writers' room we were absolutely certain that the beating heart of the show was a gay love story. I'm very proud to have been a small part of that.

2017.08.09 03:20 DanielleTorrance Hollow Man - Blue Shirts, Inc.

Disclaimer: This is all in the way distant past.
I'm writing these stories out as a type of emotional exorcism - my evil ex is very much a figure of my past, but sometimes I come back and worry at it like a dog with a bone. I hope that by writing these stories out, I can put Hollow Man in a box and finally be rid of him.
This first story's pretty mild compared to the rest, but it's as good a starting point as any.
Hollow Man and I met while we were retail slaves at Blue Shirts, Inc. I was in a different department from him, but I took every opportunity I could to swing by his cash register and chat with him. He was genuinely funny, whip smart, and super cute to boot. Picture Hugh Dancy but with even more ridiculous cheekbones. I finally worked up the nerve to ask him out in May of that year.
We stayed up until 2 in the morning making jokes and debating the finer points of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I was totally head over heels for this dude, and after a couple of weeks of covert movie dates, we decided to make it known we were a thing. This was not a Good Move.
About a week after we made it official, Hollow Man was offered a promotion at work - a pretty major one that meant the difference between him working 34 hours a week at minimum wage with no benefits and him working the full 40 with better pay and health care. For him, who had dropped out of community college, this was really good. It was also big step towards becoming a store manager or even a franchise owner someday (or whatever the Blue Shirts equivalent was).
The only problem was, this promotion made him technically a manager, and managers can't date lower down employees. I was lowest of the low at this point.
We must have had a dozen arguments about this. I told him I'd transfer to another store, get a different job, or even just quit and coast for a bit while I finished school. To me, this was just a job for spending money while I finished my bachelor's. For him, this job had potential to be his career, and he was damn good at it.
Hollow Man went back and forth, pretending that this was a very difficult decision. He wasn't sure he wanted the extra hours, he didn't know if he could handle the responsibility, and on and on. I kept prodding him and reminding him that I was not to be a factor in his decisions, that I would be wounded if he held himself back on my account, and I would lose a ton of respect for him if he did.
Well, decision day came, he took his meeting with the store owner, and came out beaming. I asked him if he took it, and he grinned and said "No! Now I get to keep staring at you while you work."
I asked him if that was the only reason he turned it down, and he assured me that no, no, he just wasn't ready for full time yet and he was just trying to look on the bright side of things.
Of course, that was a lie, and one he'd throw in my face once or twice before we broke up.
"I turned down that promotion for you! I'm so loyal and loving and committed that I fucked up my own life just to see you more often,” he'd say, expecting me to, I don't know, feel guilty or congratulate him or something? All it did was make me lose more and more respect for him every time he reminded me of it. He threw away a really good thing for a relationship that wasn’t even a month old at that point.
This was the first of many bizarre acts of self-sabotage and selfishness I witnessed from Hollow Man in our time together, and the first of many, many red flags to come. But this wouldn't be a story if I was paying attention to the warnings, now would it?

2017.04.18 20:49 Painting0125 Kinda OT but after a True Detective season 3 update, I think Hugh Dancy would make a perfect lead

Yes, that's right. Season 3 is on the way, the showrunner, Nic Pizolatto has finished writing the first two episodes with Deadwood writer on board as well. While there's no release date or any plot details, it's good to hear that the show is moving forward.
Back to Hugh Dancy, without elaborating further, I think his acting in Hannibal is True Detective material: unhinged, brooding and smart combined with he can bring a lot of impact to the show much like Matthew McConaughey's Rust Cohle did.
As for his partner, someone like Lupita Nyong'o or Alec Baldwin.

2016.04.30 14:05 lipstickpizza Production timeline of a film: Batman Begins

Hello all, like many of us who have love for film this is hopefully for people who are also fans of how a film is produced from the ground up. Taking advantage of an off day and lack of social life, I invite you to join me on this timeline of this week's recap of how Batman Begins (2005) was made.
I'd like to thank Jett from for his comprehensive updates that aided me tremendously in researching all this.
Note: I decided to skip the drama of everything that happened after Batman & Robin to this film as you can arguably write a novel of the development hell this character endured during that time. I will also try to make this as chronologically reported as possible.
Jan: In the first significant story since the cancelled project of Wolfgang Peterson's 'Batman vs Superman' (BvS), Variety breaks the news Christopher Nolan (Memento, Insomnia) had been hired by Warner Bros. to bring the Dark Knight back to the big screen.
"All I can say is that I grew up with Batman, I've been fascinated by him and I'm excited to contribute to the lore surrounding the character," Nolan said. "He is the most credible and realistic of the superheroes, and has the most complex human psychology. His superhero qualities come from within. He's not a magical character. I had a fantastic experience with the studio on 'Insomnia,' and I'm keen to repeat that experience."
The news came as a bit of a surprise due to publications reporting Nolan had recently turned in a script for a film about Howard Hughes to Castle Rock, with Jim Carrey in mind to star. Though he could have decided to go in another direction after seeing the Martin Scorsese biopic 'The Aviator' had gone into production. Nonetheless, after years of anguish for Bat fans, there was finally hope for a new Batman film to grace the big screen soon.
Feb: Confusion surrounds the Christopher Nolan project almost immediately as industry sources claim the Darren Aronofsky/Frank Miller 'Year One' film is still in development despite Nolan adapting a new Batman film for the 2000s.
ZEntertainment reports "The Nolan Batman will be a totally original project. No Year One, No Frightening, No Beyond, No Triumphant. Where the storyline will go is left up to the new screenwriters, whose names are top secret at this point."
Meanwhile, Nolan is in the middle of searching for a screenwriter who will bring his Batman to life. Nolan meets with a host of writers including Andrew Kevin Walker (BvS) but no news on who gets the job. There is speculation Nolan handles the script-writing duties himself.
Mar-Apr: Variety reports Halle Berry has signed on for Warner Bros. 'Catwoman' and will play the titular character. This film will be standalone and will not be involved with the Christopher Nolan planned film in any way.
Variety and ComicsContinuum report David Goyer, who will also direct the third installment in the Blade franchise, has been tapped to write the story for the Nolan film.
Alan Horn, president and COO of Warner Bros. announces a rough detail of what to expect for the Batman film and in a surprising turn of events, a Batman Vs Superman film that is reportedly still in development.
On Nolan's film - "First Batman origin story has Bruce witnessing the murder of parents, enraged and guilty he turns to crime before he becomes a crime-fighter. Builds the Batcave and mobile, hires Alfred, studies martial arts, etc."
On BvS - *"'We will do it.' He says it's 'dark and mean-spirited' but really, really good. The plan is to have Superman and Batman origin stories released within the same year (starting in 2005). Each movie (I think he said there would be three of each?) will deal with the Superheroes' origins and began to establish their relationship to each other which will set up 'Superman vs. Batman' to follow the backstories.
Superman and Batman find themselves at odds in 'Superman v. Batman' when Bruce goes out seeking bloody vengeance on the murderer of his new bride, Jennifer. Superman opposes him, fights him to the near death - then it's discovered that the guy behind Jennifer's murder is also this big baddie in Superman's circle and they unite to fight or something sweet like that."*
SuperHeroHype reports Christopher Nolan's first meeting with an actor regarding Batman was with David Boreanaz (Buffy, Angel).
Warner Bros. targets a release date for summer of 2005.
Christopher Nolan is also reported to be doing double duty on an adaptation of Christopher Priest's book 'The Prestige' starring Jude Law, with his brother Jonathan. Warner Bros. and Disney are in process of negotiating distribution rights.
Darren Aronofsky announces his next film will "not include Batman", thus ending the long speculation of his 'Year One' project.
Message boards around the internet erupt at the news of Ashton Kutcher (That 70s show, Dude Where's My Car?) is in talks to play the Dark Knight. Also reported is the film will feature the youngest Batman on film, furthering fears of Kutcher nabbing the role.
AiCN reports Heath Ledger (A Knight's Tale) met with Nolan in Los Angeles for Batman.
Nolan, inspired by the Christopher Reeve casting for the Richard Donner film, wants a relatively "unknown" actor for Bruce Wayne.
The Ashton Kutcher reports pick up steam as E!online and Dark Horizons all but confirm Kutcher to be the new Batman.
"When now out director Brett Ratner got close to casting SUPERMAN this year, he tested and retested Kutcher, who apparently did well. The 'known mostly as a comic actor and that's even a stretch' Kutcher seemed to want Bats over Supes (who wouldn't?) and is now close to being announced as the lead in the flick to be directed by Christopher Nolan."
"Essentially, the studio has had another 'Ratner' situation on their hands, because the director wants someone, and the studio wants someone else. That someone the studio wants is Ashton Kutcher. Thankfully, it's not as big a deal as the whole Superman thing [which has been madness], because in this place everyone gets along - and from what I hear Kutcher is the new Batman. Done deal."
Warner Bros. is reported as "sold and high up" on Ashton Kutcher as Batman but the reason the deal isn't done is Christopher Nolan insisting on an unknown actor to play the role. Warner Bros. extends the deadline for casting to the end of Summer 2003.
Fan's fears are calmed as Kutcher signs a 2 year extension on That 70s Show, effectively ruling him out scheduling wise for a Batman film.
A fan film "Batman: Dead End" written and directed by indie Director Sandy Collora makes the rounds at Comic-Con and hailed by some as "the greatest depiction of Batman on film".
MoviePoopShoot releases interview with Guy Pierce (Memento) with the actor denying involvement in the Nolan film.
*JH: You starred in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film, MEMENTO. Now word is he may direct a BATMAN film. Have you two talked about you possibly trying on that character. Would that hold any interest for you?
Guy Pearce: I don’t think so. (laughs)
JH: Not in your nature to do a superhero movie?
Guy Pearce: Not at this stage in my life. If I was ever going to do it, Chris Nolan would be the person I would do it with. But no we haven’t had any of those discussions.*
Sep: With the deadline approaching, the casting search reaches peak levels as screen tests are scheduled for various actors at the Warner Bros. Burbank lot.
The HollywoodReporter and Entertainment Weekly report the list of names for the next Bruce Wayne/Batman has been narrowed to the following names: Billy Crudup (Almost Famous), Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), Hugh Dancy (Black Hawk Down), Joshua Jackson (Dawson's Creek), Christian Bale (American Psycho), Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later), Eion Bailey (Almost Famous), Henry Cavill (The Counte of Monte Cristo).
Warner Bros. finally has their Dark Knight: BURBANK, CA, 11 September 2003–- Christian Bale has been cast in the starring role of Bruce Wayne in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming Batman movie, to be directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of production for Warner Bros. Pictures.
Principal photography on the film is expected to begin in early 2004. The movie is written by David Goyer and Nolan, and will follow the early career of The Dark Knight.
Said Nolan, "What I see in Christian is the ultimate embodiment of Bruce Wayne. He has exactly the balance of darkness and light that we were looking for."
Robinov stated, "Now that we've found the best person to play Batman, we are really looking forward to moving ahead with the rest of our casting, and are excited about the exceptional group we are assembling."
Oct-Dec: Morgan Freeman meets with Christopher Nolan for a "DoctoScientist" role and Anthony Hopkins is considered for the role of Alfred.
Pinewood/Shepperton Studios gives notice it will lend the lot to a film called "The Intimidation Game" for filming in 2004. Many speculate this is what the Batman film will be titled.
Latino Review reports Welsh designer Lindy Hemming (Topsy Turvy, GoldenEye) will handle the costume directing duties.
November 25, 2003 - Per Variety, Sir Michael Caine has agreed to play the role of Alfred Pennyworth in Batman:The Intimidation Game. Caine also spilled the beans on the development process of the film: "Batman is being made in England, but it's also being made quite differently," Caine advised CHUD's Smilin' Jack Ruby. "I had a long conversation with Christopher Nolan before I accepted the part. I only knew him from Memento and I didn't know him personally. ... The short answer was, he wants it to be more natural. I find a lot of these comic book heroes boring because they are invincible. If you're bulletproof, where's the jeopardy for the hero? You can't gas him, you can't kill him, what's the point? And he is making a very, very natural Batman. I remember one phrase he said to me, I said, 'Well, he's very powerful and strong.' And he said, 'Yes, he is Michael, but not because of Kryptonite, it's because he does pushups."
Cillian Murphy joins the film as The Scarecrow/Jonathan Crane. Murphy had tested for Bruce Wayne and though he didn't get the role, Nolan had favored his test so much so that he decided he was perfect as the creepy villain.
Jan-Mar: Production schedule announced with locations in Iceland, London and Chicago.
Morgan Freeman, Katie Holmes, Liam Neeson and Ken Watanabe join the cast as Lucius Fox, Rachel Dawes, Henri Ducard, and Ra's Al Ghul respectively (press release): *Oscar-nominated actor Ken Watanabe has joined the cast of director Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated film about the origins of the Batman legend. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Watanabe, who is nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in "The Last Samurai," will play the villainous Ra's Al Ghul, alongside stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman; Michael Caine as his trusted butler Alfred; Katie Holmes as a childhood friend of Wayne's; Liam Neeson as Wayne's mentor, Henri Ducard; and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, a former board member and sidelined employee of Wayne Enterprises.
Directed by Christopher Nolan from a screenplay by David Goyer, the film is produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Larry Franco. The executive producers are Ben Melniker and Michael Uslan.
The project is scheduled to start production in London in March.*
The role of Jim Gordon is up in the air as Chris Cooper had turned down the role offered to him by Nolan.
February 26, 2004: Cinescape reports the real title of the film is 'Batman Begins' which Variety later confirms.
March 3, 2004: A complete surprise out of left field reported by IGN first. Gary Oldman has been cast as Lieutenant James "Jim" Gordon. Via press release by Warner Bros. - *"Batman Begins," director Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated film, has commenced production in Iceland, with Gary Oldman joining the all-star cast. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
In "Batman Begins," Oldman will play Lieutenant James Gordon, a detective on the Gotham police force. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman; Michael Caine as his trusted butler Alfred; Katie Holmes as Rachel, a childhood friend of Wayne's; Liam Neeson as Wayne's mentor, Henri Ducard; Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, a former board member and sidelined employee of Wayne Enterprises; and Ken Watanabe as the villainous Ra's Al Ghul.*
The official logo/bat symbol for the film emerges on the Batman Begins site.
The Batmobile is unveiled to the public for the first time. It will also be called the "Tumbler".
Warner Bros. formally announces the release date for Batman Begins as June 15th 2005. There are questions regarding why the studio decided to release it on a Wednesday instead of the normal Friday for blockbusters.
The first image of Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne on set emerges. The internet approves the Billionaire playboy persona put on display through the gallery.
April 30, 2004: WB releases the first set of photos of Bale as Batman.
Entertainment Weekly nabs the first mainstream interview with the new Batman himself. Here's an excerpt: MUSTWORTHINESS Because -- all together now! -- he's Batman. That, and a hell of an actor. The Wales native went from losing 63 pounds to play a haunted insomniac factory worker (in Brad Anderson's forthcoming psychological thriller, ''The Machinist,'' due Sept. 24) to bulking up and strapping on a utility belt to be the Caped Crusader. (His secret: bread. ''That was what I craved most of all.'')
WHAT HE'S DOING NOW Teaming with ''Insomnia'' director Christopher Nolan to do something no one has done before: rebooting a major film franchise only eight years after it petered out. The movie reintroduces one of the most beloved superheroes in the pop-culture canon, so look for explanations on everything from where the Batmobile came from, to how Bruce Wayne's parents died, to why he has such a close relationship with Lieutenant Gordon (Gary Oldman). ''What attracted me was Chris and the knowledge that what was being aimed for was a reinvention of Batman lore,'' says Bale, taking a break halfway through shooting the film in London.
July 27, 2004: Production continues on to Chicago, where the vast majority of Gotham City scenes will be shot for three weeks.
July 28, 2004: The first teaser for the film is released online.
Variety reports David Goyer has struck a deal with Warner Bros. for a story deal regarding the sequel to Batman Begins. It should be noted Christopher Nolan is not yet signed for any followup(s) to the film.
Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard will handle dual duties on the theatrical score. This will be their first collaboration after a failed attempt on 'Secret Window' due to timing constraints.
September 15, 2004: After a lengthy shoot beginning in Iceland, principal photography will end within a couple of days with the final scene being shot in London (Bedforshire) and at Cardington Hangar, the site of 'the Narrows'.
In the same week of the news regarding Christopher Reeves' death, Brandon Routh is chosen to play the last son of Krypton in Bryan Singer's upcoming Superman film.
Speaking of Routh, his deal is for a three picture deal with an option for a fourth should a Batman/Superman team up film is still in the pipeline at Warner Bros.
With 'Begins' moving on to the post production phase, there is talk already on what direction the sequel could go on. Guy Pierce and Jude Law are heavily rumored to be circled in as D.A Harvey Dent as well as Australian actor Lachy Hulme (The Matrix Revolutions) rumored to be the iconic Joker (if he is in the film at all).
December 3, 2004: The first official poster of Batman Begins is released.
The first full trailer for the film drops online.
Previous Batman George Clooney comments on the new film: "I'm quite sure it will be a heck of a different movie from mine and fun to watch. I'm happy they're focusing on the Dark Knight. They're doing it the way it should be done."
The cancelled Aronofsky/Miller 'Year One' screenplay leaks online to mixed reactions from the fan community on the street punk version of the Dark Knight and in particular the character of 'Big Al' is singled out as the source of most of the divisiveness.
In an interview with the New York Times producer Charles Roven gives the production budget of $180 million and that Warner Bros. is banking on a big return for home video sales once the stink from Schumacher's 'Batman & Robin' is off this film.
Warner Bros. is reportedly thrilled with the test screening of the film held for execs with Christopher Nolan on hand.
Batman Begins will be released in select Imax theaters around the United States.
A bit of cross promotion occurs as a 10 minute preview of Batman Begins premieres during the broadcast of the WB show 'Smallville'. The second and last trailer for Begins also premieres.
David Goyer confirms the two characters to join the sequel will be Harvey Dent and the Joker. No further word if Dent will be Two-Face in the film. Liev Schreiber and Crispin Glover's names are added to the rumor mill.
As 'Begins' makes its worldwide press release tour, the first wave of critical reviews are hugely positive with praise for its unique take on the superhero genre, the direction and for Bale in the role of Batman. The bad taste left on critics by B&R is officially washed by this film. In addition to critics, Adam West gives his approval for Begins.
June 15, 2005: Batman Begins is released and has a first day Wednesday total of $15 million at the box office. For weekend totals, Begins pulls in $71 million in the states and an international opening at $42 million.
CNN reports Warner Bros. is none too pleased with Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise' antics at the domestic premieres/junkets for the movie and will likely move forward in a sequel without her.
Christopher Nolan comments on the inevitable sequel: *"If David's writing it, Christian's still Batman, and everyone else is not returning would be like the only student of a graduating class skipping the big day to wash the car" said the British helmer.
He dropped some other hints such as "Like Begins, one clear cut villain isn't the plan [though]" and the likelihood of Robin appearing "The studio wasn't interested in Robin. We weren't either. This is a young Batman, so Robin's a few films....not for a few pictures anyway. Dick Grayson's still in a crib somewhere. I seriously doubt I will even be involved when Robin's in the franchise" says Nolan.*
Christopher Nolan's next film announced as "The Prestige" effectively killing rumors of a direct sequel move to 'Begins'. Bale and Caine will follow Nolan into production which also kills rumors of a Batman sequel moving on without Nolan. Although the director has yet to sign a deal, his brother Jonathan Nolan (Memento) signs on to work on the project with David Goyer.
Batman Begins ends its theatrical run with a worldwide gross of $374 million, making it the second highest grossing film in the franchise behind 89's Batman. Warner Bros. touts the success of the film and looks forward to the sequel.
In less than a year after release, 'Begins' collects an impressive total of $167 million in DVD sales.
Christian Bale wins 'best hero' at the 2006 mtv movie awards. When the cast of Superman Returns presented the Best Hero Award to Batman Begins star Christian Bale, he turned to Routh and said, "Sorry Superman, but Batman's the badass." Bale also promised fans there will be more Batman films and called his wife, Sibi Blazic, "my personal Wonder Woman."
** July 20, 2006**: Absolute pandemonium on the internet as Heath Ledger is announced to play the Joker. Exactly two years from today the world will know if Christopher Nolan's risky move was the right one or a complete bust...
Whew. That was quite the morning keyboard workout. Hope those who took the time to read this enjoyed that overview. If this picks up some stream I'll try to make this a weekly thing. I was planning to do one on Park Chan Wook's Oldboy (2003) but the sheer amount of translating and reading Korean articles will probably delay it quite a bit. I'm also open to suggestions. Take care folks, have a good weekend.

2015.02.21 05:18 BostonPhotoTourist [Fragrance Friday] Burberry Brit for Men

I love the copy that Burberry’s marketing department wrote for Burberry Brit for Men:
"Nonchalant Burberry Brit for Men is a perfect illustration of modern English spirit inwrought with tradition. Young English actor Hugh Dancy sitting in front of a fabulous old-timer embodies to perfection the laid-back, elegant spirit and philosophy of this new scent for men; demureness and irony, a classic turned into casual fragrance. Citrusy freshness of mandarin and bergamot and cool, spicy notes of ginger and cardamom preceed a masculine heart of cedar and nutmeg with a touch of refined wild rose. The base is sensual due to precious exotic woods, gray amber, Tonka bean and patchouli."
What a load of shit.
For as long as there has been perfume, couturiers have been part of the work. Chanel, Knize, Yves Saint Laurent, and others have all left indelible marks and masterpieces upon the world of fragrance. But there are some houses that simply have no business making perfume because they possess neither the vision nor the taste to do it properly. Burberry falls into the latter category.
Launched in 2004, Brit for Men is nothing so much as boring and a tad loud, like the latest derivative folk band turned up a couple notches too high on a radio with blown speakers. It possesses a character than many would call “screechy:” a weird, synthetic-cardamom-and-rose top with a VERY sweet, powdery heart. It’s not really a whole lot more complicated than that, to be honest. It’s inoffensive and very commercial, the kind of thing you could wear to the office or on a date with someone you’re not really into where you just want to smell reasonably good, but don’t care about being interesting. If I were a star-giving man, I’d give it 2.5 stars out of 5. Slightly below average on all counts.

2014.12.28 23:32 SpottyRasang My Top 15 Television Performances of 2014

Honorable mentions: Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi for “Person of Interest”, Manu Bennett for “Arrow”, Julia Louis-Dreyfus for “Veep”, Andre Braugher for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, Julianna Margulies for “The Good Wife”, Samira Wiley for “Orange Is the New Black”, Louis CK for “Louie”, Pedro Pascal for “Game of Thrones”, All four “The Affair” folks
15. Clive Owen, “The Knick”
I’m not as big a fan of the show as many others are, but there’s no doubt that without Owen’s wonderful performance, the show would be missing something essential. As Dr. John Thackery, Owen gave one of the best portrayals of addiction and withdrawal that I’ve ever seen on television.
14. Lizzy Caplan, “Masters of Sex”
In season 2, Virginia Johnson once again struggled to balance her work life and personal life, and the internal conflict threatened to tear her apart. It all culminated in the season finale, which featured a heartbreaking and impeccable performance by Caplan.
Shout out: Michael Sheen
13. Jon Hamm, “Mad Men”
Jon Hamm better win that Emmy next year. He’s been consistently giving us incredible moments as Don Draper, and season 7a was no different. From Don’s relationship with Sally in “A Day’s Work” to his slow dance with Peggy in “The Strategy”, Hamm once again proved that he’s one of the best actors on TV.
12. Noel Fisher, “Shameless”
Normally, I’d be singling out Emmy Rossum or Jeremy Allen White, but Noel Fisher was one of TV’s dark horses this year. In season four–the show’s best to date–Mickey finally came out, and he did so in a sad, yet rousing, fashion. That was due largely in part to Fisher.
Shout out: Emmy Rossum
11. Allison Tolman, “Fargo”
Tolman’s performance was my favorite in a show filled with great performances. Although she could’ve used a better payoff than she got, Tolman was excellent as Deputy Molly Solverson, crafting an endearing character of her own…even if at first, it seemed as if she would just be a follow up to Marge Gunderson.
Shout out: Billy Bob Thornton
10. Aya Cash, “You’re the Worst”
I’m not sure if I can think of many TV characters who are more fun to watch than Gretchen. Aya Cash was one of TV’s best surprises this year, and whether she was making you laugh or cringe or even tear up–see “Finish Your Milk”–she was giving an insanely good comedic performance. The energy she brought was infectious, and she was endearing from the start.
9. Andrew Daly, “Review”
Daly’s performance as Forrest MacNeil anchored one of the funniest and most unique shows on TV, and while he’s certainly a fantastic comedic actor, he was even better when Forrest wasn’t in a great place. He brought pathos to a role that we weren’t expecting much of at first, and the show was amazing as a result. Daly’s performance? 5 stars.
8. Matthew Rhys, “The Americans”
Philip Jennings was an incredibly compelling character in season 2, and as much as he might’ve seemed like a cool, loving dad, Rhys also found a darker side and portrayed it with aplomb. Philip could be terrifying to watch at times, and his scene with Pastor Tim in “Martial Eagle” ranks among the best of the year.
Shout out: Keri Russell
7. Tatiana Maslany, “Orphan Black”
Maslany was as good as ever this past year, and if it’s not clear by now, this woman is talented as hell. The Helena-Sarah scene in the shower–no, not like that–was one of her finest acting moments thus far, and that’s saying something. Also, clone dance party.
6. Carrie Coon, “The Leftovers”
Between this and her role in Gone Girl, Carrie Coon has had a stellar year. As Nora Durst in The Leftovers, she took us on a fascinating journey through an intriguing character, and her showcase episode, “Guest”, is pretty much an Emmy highlight reel in one hour.
Shout out: Christopher Eccleston
5. Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent”
Tambor will always have a special place in my heart due to Arrested Development, but his role as Maura in Transparent highlights a very different side of his acting ability. We saw the pain and frustration in every facet of Maura’s being, and her attempts to connect to her family made for a very moving and beautiful show.
4. Mads Mikkelsen, “Hannibal”
As Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Mikkelsen is refined, affecting, brutal, scary, and sad. He was endlessly watchable this season, and every time he was on screen, he commanded the room; whether he was simply sitting there or whether he was completely unleashed, Mikkelsen was phenomenal.
Shout out: Hugh Dancy
3. Eva Green, “Penny Dreadful”
The show was already great, and Eva Green was even better. She set a whole new benchmark for horror performances this year, and her high points came during scenes that, in horror movies, are normally more silly than scary: possessions.
2. Aden Young, “Rectify”
The whole cast was perfect this year, but Aden Young’s performance still found a way to stand out. Daniel Holden had to deal with a town that was out to get him and a past that haunted him, and his journey so far has been one of the most gripping and poignant on television. Special kudos to Young for his work in “Donald the Normal” and “Unhinged”.
Shout out: Abigail Spencer
1. Matthew McConaughey, “True Detective”
Rust Cohle was fascinating from the very first scene, and McConaughey continued his streak of excellence with a compelling eight episodes of badassery, enigmatic monologues, and, at the end, moving catharsis. It was an eye-opening, award-worthy performance that will be tough to live up to in season two. Time is a flat circle, ladies and gents.

I spent the year of my life after high school doing nothing but getting stoned and watching Kids in the Hall. A decade later I am unemployable and have contributed nothing to society. Don't you think that is at least a little bit your fault? A little but not the important part. Now get off your ass and get a job. It's four o'clock in the afternoon for Christ's sake.
Are there any KITH sketches that you guys wrote during the original run of the show that was cut from the finished episode but you still love and wish could have made it to air? What foods consist of your ideal meal? Yes, one called Baskets by me and Kevin. We were reporters with enormous genitals who worked for a newspaper that was only concerned with issues affecting the big packages community. It took place at a press conference. Bruce was the politician, Dave was his saxophone playing wife and Mark was Peter Allan the Australian singesongwriter for some reason. Chicken Chicken Chicken
How did you end up doing Buddy Cole on Colbert? Did they approach you, or vice versa? And what was the process of generating ideas and material for each segment? Would love to know how that whole collaboration worked. (PS - loved the Brain Candy reading at TO Sketchfest! ) I approached them in August. I had been reading about what had been happening in Russia and I wanted to do something and then I though, 'Buddy is the answer.' So I had my manager call a few people and the Colbert people responded immediately. It was a joyful collaboration.
I just wanted to say that when the KITH episodes were originally airing on CBS, I was growing up queer in the fundamentalist town of Homewood, AL, and that seeing you on those episodes was a real life line for me. Being pre-internet, you were literally the only proof I had that there were other people in the world such as myself and that a world outside of Homewood might really exist (that is, an outside world that wasn't exactly like the world I was already living in). You made a huge impact in my life and I have always felt that you did a huge service with your work. To the extent that I have a question, I know that you received some criticism from people in the gay community, but do you hear people telling you how much good you did, too? (Thank you, and I love you. <3 ) Yes I do hear that as well. In fact I rarely hear negative comments any more, at least to my face but that's my own fault for reading comment threads. Thankfully today is a much more accepting and tolerant world and the war in the trenches isn't so bloody.
Just wanted to say that I'm a huge fan. You and Dave made KITH for me. The Queen, Buddy, and this skit...Gold! Honeeey! Honeeey! is how I get my SO's attention. Question for you...Did you get the inspiration for Buddy from someone you knew or? Yes I did. He was a guy I dated who died of AIDS very early on. He was hilarious charismatic and very effeminate but powerful. I started to imitate him after he died when Paul Bellini bought his first video camera. His name was Carole Beauchamp. It was his line, 'I may have been born yesterday but I still went shopping,' that started it all.
If I fund your Kickstarter, can I touch Bellini and have some fish? Yes, you can even touch him with a fish.
Saw a very old picture of KITH recently, I think it was your first photoshoot or something. My question is, how was it working with Kevin's jewfro? Seems intimidating. It was very frightening because the rest of us all hated both jews and blacks. Kevin was the first octaroon any of us had ever worked with. Once he lost the weight it seemed to make it better. We had only two things to hate and then when we found out he wasn't Jewish we were even more relieved.
When do you start filming "Francesca Fiore" the movie? (I can dream, right?) It's being filmed right now in dreamtime. I hear it's a huge hit.
How was it being in Sochi for the Olympics? The police confronting you and your team looking pretty frightening. It was an amazing experience. I guess it was frightening but I had such a great team with me including two body guards that I was never afraid. I knew we were okay when I made the main cop smile.
I'm really enjoying this season of Hannibal. The Sassy Science team is the highlight for me, and I hope all of its members will survive until the next one. knock on wood Was there any death tableau that made you lose your appetite? Yes the one that was cut, episode four, where Molly Shannon played a demented Wendy figure to a group of homicidal lost boys. It was a charred child. That one hurt.
Hi! I loved the Kids in the Hall! I've read that you were all offered spots on Saturday Night Live by Lorne Michaels, but that only Mark McKinney accepted. Is this true and why did you decline? Is there any chance that the reunion at the Toronto Sketch Fest might lead to a North American tour or a new series? No, I was never offered anything on SNL. However, I still intend to host it. Yes, there is a chance of a new tour or at least a bunch of one offs.
Was it your amazing acting ability that discouraged them from making you 'Hannibal' because they felt you would make the rest of the cast look bad? That's exactly true. The moment i read for Jimmy the casting director turned to Bryan Fuller and said, 'We have our Hannibal' and Bryan said, 'But we already have an offer out to Mads Mikkelsen' and I said, 'Look, guys, let me be Jimmy. I have so many other things on the go. I don't have time to star in your little show but I do need some walking around change. ' You'll notice Jimmy never appeared once with Hannibal last season. They were afraid the audience would go, "Wait, that guy should be Hannibal." This year they figure everyone has gotten used to Mads and so we can be on screen together.
In Kindergarten I was scolded by my teacher (who called my parents) because I was the only kid who didn't answer "Power Rangers" when we went around said what our favorite TV show was - mine was Kids in the Hall, and to this day it is still one of my favorite shows. Will you guys ever do another American tour again? Work on new material? How embarassing for you. My favourite show is the 'Power Rangers.' We hope to tour very soon and yes we are working on new material. In fact we will be in Austin and Dallas for a few test shows between the 23rd and the 26th. It's all new.
I grew up watching Brain Candy on HBO when my parents were not around. I love this movie, it has such a creepy vibe to it, and your crazy character was my favorite. I constantly think of this movie when I dance to disco music. Here is my question, it just seems to me that you guys had to cut a lot out of the movie to achieve and R rating, is this true? If so can you explain which scenes. Well we had to change the entire ending. In fact we just staged a reading of Brain Candy last week in Toronto and then later we screened the original ending. The scene in the film that sunk us at Paramount was Cancer Boy. We refused to cut him and so they cut our entire budget for press and effectively killed the film.
I have to admit, going into Hannibal not knowing anything about the series prior, I was quite surprised to see you in the cast! (That's not a bad thing, btw.) Is there any pressure on you, as the man with the comedy background, to provide some levity behind the scenes or during breaks? And if you're not the funniest person on set, who is? Not really. Everyone likes to fool around in this group. Mads and Hugh are particularly loose. I am not the funniest man on the set. I am just the loudest. That's always been my tactic.
Hello! I grew up on reruns of KITH, I feel like it had a really positive impact on my world views and sense of humor, so thank you for all of that. I think seeing aliens question the meaning of anal probing and existence at the age of 11 made life easier to handle somehow. Question – you all often portrayed women and have talked about how the joke never ended with “har har, man in a dress” or “women, am I right guys?” and you guys did it with aplomb. It was really refreshing to see comedy that wasn’t super rooted in alpha male sensibilities, but I feel like there’s less of that going on today despite all the other movements forward we’ve made in that area. Do you think it would be easier or harder to pull off the same content on TV today? Thanks again, excited for more Husk! Yes. I think it is harder today because there are so many more female comedians playing actual female characters and trans issues have become so politicized. That being said, there is room for all. Personally I don't see any problem with anyone playing anyone.
How'd you wind up on Hannibal? I auditioned. I don't even think I nailed it or anything. I had totally forgotten about it when they called months later. I just think that Bryan Fuller saw my name on the tape and went, I like that guy. He had been a junior writer on Voyager when I did it and as I said earlier it was a wonderful experience.
You were in a pretty amusing episode of Star Trek Voyager. Did you enjoy being on that show? It was the most fun I had guesting on an American television show ever with the exception of Conan of course.
Scott, my life changed for the better the day I saw my first episode of KITH. Thank you so much for all of the laughs. I'm curious about how it was working in a comedy group that consisted of two pairings. What with Bruce and Mark having worked together previously, and Dave and Kevin having worked together previously, did you ever feel like a third or fifth wheel? Like you had to fight to be a part of certain skits? Did it ever cause any strife, or did they just embrace the awesomeness that is you? I prefer to call myself the bridge although that means there is a lot of walking all over you. Luckily I come from a family of five boys so I knew how to fight. It was a big struggle at the beginning. I was introduced through Mark and they all resisted until I won them over one at a time although I think I got Dave and Kevin at the same time.
If you or Buddy could have dinner with anyone in history, real or fictional, alive or dead, who would it be? (of course if it is Buddy - where and what would he wear?) That's a good one. It's too bad they have to have dinner. I think it would be Vladimir Putin so that Buddy could talk some sense into him and then later bang the hell out of him. What can I say, ruthless power turns Buddy on but he uses his sexual insatiability for good. Besides they used to know each other during Buddy's days as an international spy when Vladimir was know as Vlad the Impaled.
Hi Scott. Will/Does Kids ever re air?, Born in 1980, I grew up watching your show and it made the weirdest kid. Thanks. Weird kids change the world.
Brain Candy still remains one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. The "coming out" musical sequence was just incredible. What was the biggest difference between making the show and making the movie? Any interesting tales from the set? The difference was making the tv show was by and large fun. Making the film was a trial except between action and cut. For example Dave and I were not speaking and yet we completely rewrote the Wally/Shrink scene on the way to the set in the van without actually addressing each other. That's family. No matter what we do we just can't kill it.
I loved your first graphic novel and think it's very cool that you're giving it away for free online. Are you a fan of graphic novels? Are there any comics you currently read? I'm glad you enjoyed it. I am giving it away because I am almost finished the second one and I'm doing a kickstarter for it so that I can get it published. We figure in order to want the second one you have to read the first one. The truth is I will keep writing this saga until it is done with me. My favourite comics as a kid were The Silver Surfer, Metal Men, Fantastic Four, The Sub Mariner, Aquaman, Richie Rich, Little Lotta, Hot Stuff and Classics Illustrated. Now you know how old I am.
I asked Hugh Dancy on his AMA on what you're like off-camera and he said that you come alive when it comes to modern dance, which he says it's the "love of your life". Is that true? Also, I saw the episode of KITH when Buddy burns his bar and you burn the childhood photo of Kurt Cobain. What led to that decision to burn the photo? Hugh Dancy is a lying sack of shit. It's he who is the modern dancer. I have always been the classical type. Rigid and Formal and a slave to Austrian choreography which is not just marching. I always felt KITH were like Nirvana in terms of comedy to our generation so I wanted us to die together.
Love you Scott! Larry Sanders is one of my all time favorite shows. Could you share some thoughts about working with Jeffrey Tambor and Gary Shandling? They were both great to work with and for. I just saw Jeffrey about a month ago on the plane coming back from New York where I had just appeared on Colbert. We hadn't seen each other in years but we had a great talk. Gary, whom I have not seen since I filmed some stuff for the dvd release about ten years ago, was an amazing boss. He was constantly trying to make things better. and didnt care where it came from. He was also very kind and generous with his time. A real class act and oh yeah, a comedy genius.
Is Hugh Dancy as pretty in real life? No comment. Hugh is less pretty and more handsome. He's also seventy five per cent more British and eighty three per cent funnier than he has a right to be.
Ahhh! I love and miss KITH so much. I don't even know what to ask! How big was the biggest crouton you ever saw? Also, if you had to get knuckle tattoos, what would you get? I'd probably tattoo lots of thick coarse black hair on them or croutons.
What tips would you give to aspiring actors? Get a thick skin and wear it every day and when it wears out get another until someone notices. Do everything possible relating to performing and don't take any job that you like too much or make too much money because it might take you away from your true love. And of course, you need luck.
Do you ever get grossed out when reading the Hannibal scripts/while on set? Not really. I am officially dead inside.
Thanks for doing this AMA! I used to watch Kids in the Hall on repeat in my childhood. It twisted me in all the right ways. My question is, what's Buddy Cole up to right now? Has he received new found admiration after his appearance on the Colbert Report? He has. Right now he is mulling over offers. Mostly he's mulling over why there have been no offers so he's decided to mull over ideas. He has one and he hopes Hollywood likes it because it's only going to change everything.
Hi Scott! Big fan. Love kids in the hall since I was 13 years old. A couple of questions for you man. First What made you and the troupe decide to tour once again and how does it feel to revisit your characters after such a long hiatus? We love performing together live more than any other form of performing. The characters are never too far from me. That could be taken as how wonderful or how sad.
Best places to eat in LA/Canada? I'm no foodie so here are a couple of modest joints I love.
LA Fatburger is the best burger joint in the world.
Toronto Ginger on Yonge for regular Vietnamese comfort food.
So...are you always going to make sure to get a stool sample from now on? I'm so glad you brought that up. I had been going on about it to the team throughout the investigation but as usual they all thought, 'Oh it's just Jimmy and his scat talk.' 'Nuff said.
Who would you say was the funniest member of the Kids in the Hall crew was? In case this is a crew member fishing for a compliment I'm going to say 'You.'
Does Gillian Anderson like Kids in the Hall? PLEASE SAY YES. I have no idea. I've never met the woman.
How did your battle with cancer change your life? It made me much more appreciative of how little time we have on this earth.
Hi Scott. Big fan! Any interest in doing more Buddy Cole segments for Colbert? It was great to see Buddy interacting with people! I would love it but it's up to them. It was fun to have Buddy out in the world. It's certainly made me think re. future Buddy endeavours.
Hi Scott! First I'd just like to say that as a gay teenager your very own Buddy Cole really helped me to come to terms with myself and appreciate the LGBT community. Will the KITH be returning anytime soon? Oh, and of all the sketches you've been in, which is your favourite? Thank you. We won't be on TV soon but we will be live soon. We are in Austin and Dallas in April. I have no favourite children but 'Comfortable' is pretty damn close. That's the one where I eat Kevin out. There's other stuff but I choose to focus on that.
Hi Scott!! I'm a big, big fan of the Scott Free podcast. It's so wonderful! I noticed it doesn't have much in the way of visual branding, though. I'm a Toronto-based graphic designer & illustrator and I wanted to ask you: do you need some? I want to help! <3. Thank you and yes we do. This is the email of my producer Jeff Goodes. [email protected].
Hey there, love your work. Any chance of us ever getting a Kids In The Hall reunion? I promise to not squish your head if you say yes! We are always reunoning. We just did a live reading of Brain Candy last week and will be in Dallas and Austin in April. We are hoping to do something a little more permanent soon. Of course by that I mean build a concrete storm shelter.
Do you have a favorite character out of all the ones you portrayed on Kids In The Hall? My boyfriend and I are huge fans - thank you for being such an awesome person! I love Buddy, Fran, Francesca and Danny. There are others but i find I do those the most.
Hi! Fan of KITH, you guys are all hilarious. What is Kevin McDonald like and will there be any more KITH stuff in the future? Kevin is a carbon based organism just like everybody else. There is always KITH stuff. We will be in Austin and Dallas in April.
Hey Scott! What's your favorite part about shooting Hannibal? Love the show! My favourite part would have to be the free lunch. You have no idea how helpful that is. And if I remember I can always pack some away in a takeout container for later so basically an entire days worth of food is taken care of. I hate to crow but it's a sweet life.
I heard Weston Esterhazy is working on a new project, can you tell us more about that? He is but why listen to me when I can let him tell you exactly what he's been up to lately.
WESTON"S VERY OWN WORDS The other day while walking down Melrose who should I see goose stepping towards me but Tippi Hedren and her daughter Melanie Griffith and they were both sporting camel toes. Yeah, very similar ones too. You could tell they were related. This was my lucky day except I didn’t have my camera. Retardedly, I had decided to take the day off from stalking the stars to do some comics shopping and now I had pure gold and no way to spin it. Then I noticed them stopping in front of my favorite comic/poster places. Melanie got all hot and bothered at this old poster in the window of, I assumed, one of her old movies. She started kissing the glass fervently and then Tippi pulled a little camera out of her purse to take a picture and I started thinking about my old dog named Tippi who got lumpy and died. Then I thought, ‘Somehow I have to get that camera’. So as Melanie pressed her fish lips against the window I yelled out, “”Why don’t I take a picture of the two of you together. ‘ They loved the idea. You could tell they’d been drinking. So they got into position but the way they were standing, you couldn’t see the goods so I asked Tippi to throw her arm around her daughter and push her pelvis forward. She looked confused. I suddenly realized, it wasn’t Tippi Hedren at all but Janet Leigh and then I looked over at Melanie Griffith and realized that it wasn’t Melanie either, it was actually Jamie Lee Curtis. It was a mother and daughter pair but the problem was, it was the wrong pair and isn’t she supposed to be a hermaphrodite. So I tell Jamie that I’m sorry that I mistook her for Melanie Griffith but that at least I mistook her for a woman and not David Bowie. And then she goes, “ I am Melanie Griffith, dummkopf.” Now I was totally confused. What kind of person besides a Nazi says dummkopf and isn’t Janet Leigh dead? Then Janet goes, “ And I’m sure not her fucking mother.” Then I realized it wasn’t Janet Leigh but David Spade and the movie poster she had been kissing was ‘The Benchwarmers’. I thought I was going to be sick. Originally I had intended to take the picture and then run off with the camera, yelling ‘Stop Thief’ at a passing car but I decided against it, as the photo now was obviously worthless. So I took the picture for them and then tossed the camera back to the elfin David. Somehow it missed and the camera binged Melanie right in her kisser. I’m sure her lips later swelled up to twice abnormal size but I didn’t wait around to see. I turned and hightailed it out of there with the Spadester in hot pursuit, his little legs pumping furiously but it was no contest. He’d gotten soft. Stars are no match for the homeless. That’s why they hate us so much. They’re jealous of our thinness. Later that night as I lay snug in my bed of leaves under Peabo’s hedge I ran my thumb up and down my jutting ribs and six pack and thought about how I could turn this experience into money. I fell asleep to visions of millions of dollars coming from my book on using the techniques of the homeless to lose weight. My last thought was, ‘This is going to be bigger than Jenny Craig.’
What TV show was your favorite growing up? As a little boy I would say Beverly Hillbilly's, Green Acres, Land of the Giants, Johnny Quest, Lost in Space and others. I loved science fiction and comedy.
How did you come up with the idea to turn your Danny Husk character into an entire graphic novel? Do you act out scenes or responses he might say while you come up with the story? I wanted to do something that would combine my two greatest loves, comedy and fantasy. I was tired of being typecast as gay and so I thought Danny is who no one thinks I can be so I will be him. I also knew that I was going to throw everything at this character and he had to just shrug it off and go 'next.' The story is constantly coming to me. It has been fourteen years now since I started telling it and I suspect it will never end. This is only the second of three and maybe more graphic novels.
You made Canada seem cool, and for that I thank you. Also, what ever came of your one man show about the Husseins? Funny that you mention that. I am thinking of redoing it with a greater focus on the visionary dream and it's affects on my life. I was working on it last night.
Hi Scott, thanks for doing this AMA! What's the proudest moment of your entire career? It hasn't happened yet.
Scott, today is the first full day of spring, which always makes me think of you: Link to Any chance of a Kids/Hannibal crossover where this guy is Jimmy’s Price’s evil twin? Probably not but I am waiting for the appearance of Jimmy's twin. Who says Jimmy is the good twin?
Hi, Scott! Big fan of yours and of KitH. I have Buddy Babylon and volume 1 of Husk. Looking forward to seeing you in Austin next month! What are you most looking forward to about it? The lake.
Any chance of a Buddy Babylon sequel? Buddy Babylon II, Buddy Babylon Strikes Again, or whatever all those unauthorized Hollywood Babylon sequels were titled. I would love it. After all Buddy was only forty at the end of the first book which is less than a quarter of his expected lifespan.
What was your favourite scene to play in the Hannibal series? It's the one in tonight's episode where Jack, Zeller and I go to Amanda Plummer's house. She was wild. You never knew what she was going to do. I loved it.
I loved "Buddy Babylon." Is there any chance of a sequel? Absolutely. After all he was only forty at the end.
How on Earth is this not the most upvoted comment. Because you're wearing clothes. Ask your next question nude?
I don't really have a question, but I loved you on KITH as Buddy Cole. That skit always had me in stitches. And you were always the prettiest lady on KITH. You went too far with the prettiest lady comment. I would go with hottest.
Don't have much of a question, but wanted to express my sincere appreciation, as a gay man who was always interested in becoming a comedian, you had a huge influence on my coming out as well as my sense of humour. Thank you! I'm glad I had an impact. That's always been my main goal. Good luck.
No question, just a kudos on Mrs. Hurdicure. You were wonderful. Oh dear, you're too kind. That calls for a cup of tea.
I went with my Family to see you guys live in Montreal in the mid 90's. Bruce actually grabbed my little brother (He must have been 6 or 7) and brought him on stage and swung him around. Just wanted to say that you guys were way better than SNL or MAD TV could ever be! So how's your little brother today? Most of the kids Bruce swings around on stage suffer debilitating side affects for years.
The only reason I started watching Hannibal is because I heard Scott Thompson shows up in it. So, I don't have a question, but there's that. There is that and now there is this.
Just wanted to say you kinda look like a young Bruce Willis in that Proof pic you provided. Cool, see ya. I love you for saying that. I love Bruce Willis. See ya.

Hey Hugh! You are incredible as Will Graham! So stoked for the new season! When did you find out what Will's fate was going to be at the end of the first season? How did that conversation go? Did Bryan Fuller just approach you and was like "So yeah, I know you're kind of the main character on this show but you're going to get royally fucked over and spend the entire next season in a cell"? First time I met Bryan he pitched about 4 season's worth of TV. Including cell time. But the thing that got me was that I'd vomit up someone's ear (the ear-candidate actually changed). When I got tired during the 1st season I'd cling onto that dream.
Will sweats a lot. Is there just a giant barrel of glycerin marked "Will Sweat" in makeup? It's worse than that. There's so many different types. But that's nothing compared to the blood. There's clothes blood, hair blood, eye blood, mouth blood, prosthetics dept blood and on and on. For some reason it's never quite the right consistency or colour so we end up creating a cocktail with everyone chipping in their opinions - bit darker, no no that's too arterial. And then they cover me in it.
Which was your favorite dream-scape or hallucination to inhabit? Which was more scary? Mads seems like a nice guy, does he stay in character or are you both tempted to laugh sometimes? I liked when Will started sleepwalking except that it required me to walk around the country roads outside Toronto in sub-zero temperatures in my underwear. But that was when I got a sense of what road we were going to take him down, with a new sympton hitting him every week. Lots of fun. Like, 'this week you get to have aural hallucinations'. Great!
Noone stays in character except perhaps Scott Thompson.
How does Mads Mikkelsen smell like? With his nose like everyone else.
How do you get your hair to look so perfectly tousled? I have a professional tousler who travels with me at all times.
What's it like working with Mads? I worked with Mads first about 10 years ago in King Arthur, which was a very different kettle of fish, mostly spent ojn horses killing people painted blue. We were in Dublin for 6 months and my memory ios patchy, but the one thingv I definitely took away was that I'd want to work with him again with fewer horses aqnd more acting. Followed his carrer since and for me he's one of the best screen actors working anywhere. So the chance to sit opposite him and knock Bryan's dialogue back and forth was incredible. He came onto the show after me and I was basically checking email every 5 mins hoping it would work out and I think it has. Good guy also.
I want to have a nice dinner tonight. Any suggestions? I would try something vegetarian for dinner. Or just watch hannibal we'll eat for you.
Do you ever compare acting notes with your wife about playing a mentally unstable law enforcement officer on a television series? Yes, mainly because ofg the danger of terrible overacting. We're on a tight schedule, so there's not much time to offer up different takes or levels of crazy. so you go home at the end of the day hoping you didn't just do the worst acting of your life. And then she talked me down.
Hi Hugh! Thanks for getting so involved with the fannibals - you, Mads, and Bryan make it such an awesome community. Going into the second season, how aware were you of things like the fans' constant cry of "someone please help Will Graham"? This leads to my next question: will someone ever help Will Graham? Will Graham has to help himself.
What were your (and the cast/writers) thoughts on Utah/SLC Valley cable station KSL's refusal to air Hannibal due to "excessive graphic violence"? Link to story. I love Bryan Fuller's work so of course I watched the show and it's quite interesting. You know it's a free world. And in some ways it's like a badge of honour. I actually think that the one thing we don't do is desensitize violence. And actually another thing - we don't casually or predominantly inflict violence, in particular sexual violence, on women. Our show is equal opportunity. So, sure, don't watch. But for me there are other culprits more worthy of censure.
Hi, Hugh! My whole house (dogs included) love you on Hannibal. Will be seeing any screen time from Winston and the gang this season? Alana's looking after the dogs. They'll be back.
Do you think Hannibal would survive a zombie apocalypse? He would be their God. But I think he'd find it a little trying, I've never heard of a zombie with a passion for cooking their food.
Have you ever had any nightmares after seeing some of the death tableaus? did any of them scare you/disgust you more than others? No. The only one that freaked me out a little was my neurologist, Dr Suttcliffe, the reason being the prtosthetic was so graphic and I walked on set after they'd prepped it (ie dressed with blood etc) when I wasn't expecting it. But really it was because the Dr was played by a friend, John Benjamin Hickey (we'd worked together on The Big C) and seeing him with his head chopped in half like a pez dispenser was a bit troubling.
Where would you like to see Will/the show go? Obviously you've got the limits of the book series, but is there a direction you'd like to take? What is a role you'd love to play some day! I'd like to see Will get a bit more agency, obviously he was in some ways quite passive in 1, in fact didn't even know what was happening to him. So I want to see him take action. That said our version of action is always going to involve a certain amount of talking. I wouldn't say we're limited by the books exactly - we have to judge right how far we can travel within the parameters of the universe. I think the further we get the more we can play. So that when we get to red Dragon etc you're not suddenly going to know EXACTLY what will happen.
When you are on set does your accent slip out while you are filming? Not so far, at least I don't think so. They can do amazing things in post though so its possible they put me through some kind of American filter.
What was it like working on Venus in Fur? It is one of my favourite plays and you were amazing in that production. Great. 1hr 40 mins on stage nonstop with a great actress, Miss Nina Arianda. So much fun. A serious workout, mentally and physically. I think I read that it's the most produced play across America this year which is probably in part because they only have to pay 2 actors, but also because there's so much in it.
Are you okay with the idea of a Hannibal/Pushing Daisies crossover? Yes though I have no idea what it would look like. Bryan seems to reemploy everyone he's ever worked with so I guess it'll happen by default.
What's Scott Thompson like off camera? He's a very serious, sober, introverted individual who comes alive when you touch on the love of his life which is of course modern dance.
You (and Will) seem to spend a lot of time in season 2 in your little cage talking to people, you even get a straightjacket and a muzzle - Do you find that limiting as an actor to be restricted like that or do you take it as a challenge to focus on Will himself and his relationship with other characters? Yes there's some limits no doubt. Technical mainly - there's only so many things you can do in a cell, and once you've sat on your bunk, paced, stared menacingly and approached the bars you've pretty much run the full gamut. Also you spend most of the time trying not to let a bar get between you and the camera and if it does you see the camera crew swearing and/or gesturing you to move over, so it's kind of hard to lose yourself in the moment. But that said it felt kind of iconic, mask in particular
Do you really think we wouldn't be able to recognize human meat if we ate some? Absolutely. There's no way you can recognize something you haven't already encountered. Unless there's something you're trying to tell me..?
Did Mads really bite you during the TCA's? If he did, did it hurt? Did he tell you he was going to do it, or was it completely by surprise? I think I asked him to. Anything for NBC.
What's your favorite episode of Hannibal? Good question - I think the finale of season 1. David Slade who shot the 1st ep came back and tied everything up; I thought it hit a really good emotional pitch, and all the throwbacks and parallels to ep 1 in GJH's kitchen were so well done by Bryan. Plus that vomiting thing.
How hard was it to follow Will down his descent into madness and self-doubt? Did you ever begin to question your own sanity? Not exactly but it was hard to keep track. So I kind of questioned if other people would question my sanity.
Hey Hugh! Thank you for doing this. Did you ever consider playing Will Graham with a southern accent? No I think that would have tied him down too much. He has had a very itinerant childhood, which I think makes sense that mentally he's quite itinerant, so something more generic, to reflect that, was better. I'd love to do a Southern accent but let's face it there's a long history of Brits doing horrible Southern accents so I need to excercise caution. Words that will probably come back to haunt me.
Hi, I'm a big fan. Eagerly awaiting the premier tonight. Could you tell me more about the airport carpet thing? Go to - a friend set it up, and I've merely assisted by spreading the word and photographing a few carpets. Our work is never done.
In taking on the character of Will Graham, did you (or Bryan) come up with a more fully developed background of Will's life before the FBI? Will we be getting any snippets if this is the case or can you share a bit of that backstory? Yes there's a fair bit in Red Dragon, in terms of his background, that we touch on in season 1 - traveling around with his Dad, having been a homicide detective, worked in forensics etc. The conversation was not so much adding biographical detail but exploring what we knew - eg what would he have been like as a homicide detective and the answer was he probably wouldn't have lasted long. Which he didn't.
Any favourite "Fannibal" stories? Also, do you have a favourite line you delivered in Season 1? Nothing but good stories, and encounters, with Fannibals. Comiccon was amazing. Favourite lines were probably the speech in GJH's kitchen in the season finale as it dawns on me what he has done. and also from ep 1 "I like the smell of urinal cake.'
When you were filming Hysteria was it difficult to keep a straight face when you were pretending to pleasure women? I'd like to say that there's nothing in the least bit amusing about pleasuring women. But it turns out that's not true.
Hugh- so grateful that you are taking the time. How did you prepare for the role of Will and did you look back to Manhunter or Red Dragon (the film) for any inspiration? If all things go your way, do you hope to be involved with the show beyond the events of Red Dragon? I read the books, Red Dragon for season 1 and then the others moving forward, because as I'm in jail/asylum it seemed the descriptions of Hannibal in Silence etc might be of value, and they were. Moving forward who knows? But yes I hope to be involved.
Does Mads Mikkelsen's breath smell like flowers? Not any I've encountered.
Can we get Nina Arianda into Hannibal? Maybe as a potential love interest for Will, or maybe as Clarice Starling. You guys were amazing in Venus in Fur. Thanks. Which awards to you have, to be exact?
P.S. You (and the Hannibal team) are doing amazing work. I can't praise the show enough. I only have awards I want to throw at it. I think the conversation about Nina did actually come up - I'd love it, but she wasn't available.
Dear Hugh, what is your favorite book? Sabbaths theater by Philip Roth, Women in Love by DH Lawrence.
Not Hannibal related, but do you miss Staffordshire? Yes!
