Grand Theft Auto V: A Look Back at the Major Leaks

2020.05.27 20:43 timmmy8 Grand Theft Auto V: A Look Back at the Major Leaks

Here we go again. Buckle in. This post is a biggie, this time covering Rockstar’s latest entry in the series about grand theft…and auto, "Grand Theft Auto V". There were so many questions about what possible direction this franchise could go, with many rumours seemingly just spouting nonsense and seeing what gained traction, but there were some common themes amongst the leaks. Whether this meant that this was all genuine information, or whether they just all started copying each other, no one will know – although I believe in the latter.
Of course, naturally, with this being Rockstar’s biggest franchise and people desperate for just about any piece of information they could get, legitimate or otherwise, there were hundreds of rumours and leaks for this game, and I will do my best to sift through the endless supply of such and talk about the ones worth mentioning.
Let’s jump in, and here is a spoiler warning just in case.

May 4, 2010 – E3 Leak Reveals “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 2”

Way back in 2010, Game Reactor shared the alleged lineup for 2010’s E3 event, detailing many games that are going to be revealed, including “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 2”. Other interesting mentions in this “leak” include a new “Half-Life”, a sequel to “Bully”, and a premature announcement of “Kingdom Hearts 3”.
Outcome? Fake. Never trust E3 leaks.

26 July, 2010 – Is "GTAV" Heading to Hollywood?

VG247 shares with the world the first real hint that the game is headed back to America’s sun-spoilt West Coast. While the article linked does have the tease in a conversation format, it does make mention of Hollywood and that an announcement could be coming soon. Separately, it seems Eurogamer reached out to their own sources and were able to confirm that while Rockstar had been scouting out the Hollywood area, they were unable to confirm for what actual franchise it was for. This wouldn’t be the first time Rockstar has taken "GTA" to Los Angeles, with "San Andreas" already staking that claim.
Outcome? Confirmed.
As we all know, "GTAV" was set in Los Angeles, and this was our first clue to such.

February 28, 2011 – Rockstar Registers Web Domains

Courtesy of XboxAchievements, due to the original source being taken down, readers are able to treat themselves to a handful of domain names that Rockstar had publicly registered. While on the surface these do not appear to have any mention on the game, as correctly speculated in the article, these turned out to be related to in-game websites and businesses. The one’s registered were;
CashForDeadDreams.com - buy second-hand items from the elderly
SixFigureTemps.com - a job site to make money fast
HammersteinFaust.com - an employment firm business in the game
LifeInvader.com -the game's social networking service
The only one registered that doesn’t seem to make an appearance in the game is StopPayingYourMortgage.net, although typing this into an actual browser will take you to Rockstar’s "GTAV" site.
Outcome? Confirmed. As we can see, majority of these actually end up in the game, and I am sure I didn’t even have to provide proof for LifeInvader.

March 8, 2011 – Casting Call Leaked, Rockstar’s Next Game Codenamed “Rush”

GameWatcher reports that Rockstar have put out a casting call for an “interactive project”, which has been code-named “Rush”. The call seeks performers for the following roles;
Mitch Hayes – 38 yrs old – Annoying, wise cracking, highly successful FBI agent. In great shape. Does triathlons, drinks low cal beer, but still has a sense of humor.
Miguel Gonzalez – 25 yrs old – Young Mexican American FBI agent, caught between a few mob bosses. Very clean cut
Clyde – 23 yrs old – Moronic, almost inbred and creepy white trash hillbilly. Very naïve but in a creepy ‘it’s only incest sort of way’
Brother Adam – 50 yrs old – Welsh monk, cult leader, yoga teacher, very lithe, very into exploring your personal tension through gripping massage. Needs Welsh accent.
Mrs Avery – 48 yrs old – Neurotic soccer mom, home maker, anxious and addled on pain killers. Very angry at neighbor MRS Bell.
Mrs Bell – 45 yrs old – Swinger, and mellow Californian divorcee. Ugly but comfortable with self.
Eddie – 47 yrs old – Weed evangelist, guy who started smoking at 30, and is now a leading proponent of marijuana’s fantastic properties. White, awkward.
Ira Bernstein – 56 yrs old – publicist for an actress known as America’s newest sweetheart who just so happens to love animals, orphans, drugs and sex. He’s always trying to hide her latest indiscretion.
Kevin De Silva – 18 yrs old – Albert’s fat, FPS playing gamer son. Smokes a lot of weed, has anxiety issues and a card for a bad back, very soft, very opinionated. Into making racist comments while playing online.
Harut Vartanyan – 42-52 yrs old – Armenian car dealer, moneylender, would be Fagin and would be bully. Heavily connected to the underworld, but irritates people so much no one likes him.
Nervous Jerry – 48 yrs old – paranoiac living in the sticks, near Simon, completely paranoid, and terrified of Simon.
Calvin North – 55 yrs old – clapped out FBI agent who now mostly works offering advice on TV shows – whose only claim to fame turns out to be entirely false – but a decent guy in other ways. Badly dressed. Divorced. Putting on weight.
Jerry Cole – 53 yrs old – disabled IT expert and criminal information vendor.
Rich Roberts – 35 yrs old – English hardman actor, who acts tough but who wants to do serious work – the only problem is he can’t quite read the words.
Alex – 52 yrs old – white, loosie goosie hippy rich guy who has lost his money and is getting desperate but trying not to.
Scarlet – 45-52 yrs old – unshaven female spiritualist and hippy with a love of exploring the wilderness. Very into journeys.
Chad – 29 yrs old – pretty boy misogynist Beverly Hills party boy. Made money, but not as cool as he thinks he is.
Tae Wong – 39 yrs old – somewhat incompetent Chinese mobster, loves doing ecstasy, going to raves.
Taes Translator – 45 yrs old – VERY STRAIGHT LACED Chinese translator, terrified of his boss’s dad. Male, awkward. Needs to speak Chinese.
A big thank you to GTA Fandom for being able to compare the casting call with the game’s final release. Here is a table for those who want to see it;
Comparison between the casting call and the in-game characters
What else is interesting is that Trevor Phillips, one of the game’s main protagonists, was referred to as Simon here, while Albert De Silva in-game is instead Michael De Santa.
Outcome? Confirmed. Although the names have changed, you can definitely see the resemblance of many of the characters in the game, and that the majority did appear albeit under a different name.

March 29, 2011 – Stuntman “Typo” Places "GTAV" on his Resume

Declan Mulvey just might have made a typo when he placed "Grand Theft Auto V" on his resume, saying he did stunt work for the game. However, once eagle-eyed internet sleuths noticed this, according to Eurogamer he told CVG (which I cannot find the article), that it was simply a typo and meant to write “Grand Theft Auto IV”. What is interesting is that this was never corrected, and that he was never in the credits for that game - I think he simply made an oopsie.
Outcome? Confirmed. Definitely not a typo, as he is credit in "GTAV "and is not credited in "GTAIV".

June 5, 2011 - Play as a Cop in "GTAV"

As shared on GTAForums, one very controversial rumour regarding the game is that it would feature a story where you play as a rookie cop, working your way up in the ranks to either being the biggest detective in the city, or a cop-gone-rogue. I won’t post the whole “leak” word-for-word, but it sounds like it would have played a lot like L.A. Noire, Rockstar’s detective game also set in Los Angeles.
Based on the rumour, you would start the game as a rookie cop fresh out of the academy, named “Rock or Brock”, and as the story moves along, the player would find himself challenged by his partner who is working in the criminal underworld. The further you progress, the more you would find out that your partner is dirty, but you have a choice to either work with him illegaly or to investigate him - with the endgame resulting in either the player becoming the captain of the police force, or a “dirty cop Kingpin”. Post game, you would continue performing these roles, either abiding and enforcing the law as the captain, or selling contraband and performing other illegal tasks as a kingpin.
Gameplay wise, you would have to respond to dispatches over the radio, perform traffic stops, aid civilians, participate in car chases and even menial traffic tasks such as fining those with faulty brake lights, or speeding. The further you progress, the more involved you get with drug dealers, pimps, and organised crime. If a player wants to stray to the dark side, they can plant and steal evidence, beat informants, and sell drugs and guns.
Other minor details include the return of some characters from San Andreas such as “CJ”, being able to go through SWAT training, helicopter training, performing traffic duty, being able to carry a baton, mace, and taser, and being able to handcuff characters through rotating the analogue sticks.
Obviously, you will learn more details about this leak by opening the above forum post, but at the time this was not well received by all, some questioning why a game made famous for allowing players to commit the crimes they want, would now have them play on the other side of the law.
Outcome? Fake. Nothing turned out to be true, although it did “guess” that the weapon wheel from Red Dead: Redemption would return.

June 20, 2011 – 2012 Release “Pretty Likely” for "GTAV"

Sources close to Rockstar Games have confirmed with GameSpot that development is “well under way”, and that a 2012 release is looking pretty likely. Additionally, Gamespot reports that the final touches are being worked on now, such as minigames, and that the scale of the game is vast, saying “It’s the big one”.
Outcome? Plausible. As we know, the game launched in 2013, and it was a “big one”.

October 25, 2011 – Rockstar Announce "Grand Theft Auto V"

Rockstar Games announce "Grand Theft Auto V" on Twitter.

October 25, 2011 – Kotaku Confirm LA setting, Possible Multiple Playable Characters

On the same day that the game is announced, Kotaku is able to confirm that "GTAV" will be set in Los Angeles, according to their source who is familiar with the game. As well as talking about the setting, they have other sources that the game will feature multiple playable characters -something that was somewhat touched on with "GTAIV’"s expansions. Not much else to report here.
Outcome? Confirmed. The game, as we all know, features three playable characters and is set in Rockstar’s version of LA.

November 2, 2011 – "Grand Theft Auto V" Trailer drops

Get nostalgic here!

November 4, 2011 – Los Santos Map Leaked by Employee?

Thanks to iGTA5 we can see that an employee apparently shared a version of the game’s map on Twitter, which is viewable right here. It does show Los Santos and Vinewood, but we know that this map isn't an accurate representation of the released version - it could be an early version, but I doubt it. Shortly after posting, the account named “toronotoJack233” got deleted.
Outcome? Fake.

November 5, 2011 – UK Magazine Leaks "GTAV" Information

As reported on VG247, it seems that an employee of a Playstation-focused magazine has leaked some information about the recently announced "GTAV". There is quite a lot of information, but it basically comes down to;
It is possible that this is a legitimate leak, some of the points made are representative of some aspects of the final game. However, just looking we can see stuff like rock-climbing, canoeing, and abseiling did not feature, or neither did earthquake tremors. There also was no need to focus on refuelling vehicles, nor was there the ability to use human shields in combat.
Outcome? Plausible. It is possible that some of this information genuinely came about as a leak, although I don’t feel confident enough in the content to say a verified leak – especially as this came after the trailer.

November 8, 2011 – More “Leaks” at GTAForums

Another big pile of leaks, this time from a user called OpenSuvivor, and now on the GTAForums. However, the post had been deleted pretty swiftly by the forum moderators, so we will be using this reddit post as our source of information.
Another big list of stuff that I encourage you to read, even if just for old time’s sake. Some interesting notes though mention;
As we know, 99% of this list is just completely inaccurate, making it easy to determine the validity of this “leak”. Having said that, it’s still fun to read, and of course at the time there is just no way of knowing if it really is fake.
Outcome? Fake. I don't think it is coincidence that these recent fake leaks all came out after the trailer.

March 28, 2012 – Former Rockstar Employee Reveals Information

Another “insider” leak, this time coming from “a friend of someone who recently got sacked from Rockstar North for general misconduct”. While the original document is no longer viewable, it is possible to find out what was written thanks to Playstation Lifestyle. Straight away, looking back, we can make a pretty quick judgement about the validity of this “leak”.
Firstly, they mention that the protagonist “will be one character, and one character alone”. This character’s name is Albert De Silva, and he has a kid Kevin who is pretty much your typical gamer who smokes weed. Our protagonist is the man that we saw in the first trailer, and he will not die at the end of this game.
Next we know that multiplayer lobbies can hold 32 players on Xbox 360 and PS3, and that you will be able to form gangs that level up with reputation, rather than XP. There is an underworld that has a working economy, and the players can take drugs – which will have side effects.
We learn (again) that the map is five times as large as the "GTAIV" map, and that planes are now flyable in this game, unlike the previous "GTA" entry. Guns and cars will also be customisable in this game, allowing suppressors on weapons, and nitrous on cars. Gunfights are now meant to be more realistic, and shooting will be more difficult out of cars due to shaking cameras.
The most interesting piece of information is the mention of the game aiming to be released in May 2013. A release date hadn’t been formally announced at this point by Rockstar, but an end of 2012 release I believe was the consensus at the time.
Outcome? Fake. Some of these points are a mix whole truths and entirely inaccurate, while some also blur the line. For example, they got the main character part correct (as we know that Albert was Michael’s name in development), but they were incorrect in stating one character and that he will not die (for as we know it is possible he can). Multiplayer lobbies only held 16, and there was no underworld economy.

April 10, 2012 – Rockstar Employee’s CV Leaks October 2012 as Release Date

Character animation developer for Rockstar, Alex O’Dwyer, mentions on his CV that he had worked on "Grand Theft Auto V", and that it is expected to release during October 2012, as viewable here. Since this was spotted, it has since been removed, with no comment from O’Dwyer or Rockstar. What is interesting, is that if this is also a legitimate leak, it would have also confirmed a PC version of the game.
Outcome? Confirmed. While the launch dates did end up being incorrect, the mention of the PC version and taking into consideration that he did work on the game, I believe that it is possible that October 2012 was a launch goal internally at Rockstar – at least at one point.

May 15, 2012 – "GTAV" Vehicle List Found in "Max Payne 3"

A user on GTAForums had allegedly found the vehicle list for "Grand Theft Auto V" within the game files of "Max Payne 3", outlining the types of trains, cars, boats, helicopters, and bikes that players would be able to use. Vehicles of note included a cable car, a chair lift, a ski-mobile, and an APC. If memory serves me correctly, these are some of the vehicles mentioned that did not make it into the final game, while on the other hand there are dozens of vehicles that are not mentioned here that are in the game.
Outcome? Fake.

September 9, 2012 – Our First Gameplay Leak?

A popular video that I personally remember doing the rounds before the game’s release was this video here, which shows a car being driven through the incredibly detailed desert, before getting into a helicopter. The map shows an incredibly detailed mountain range, and a desert populated with scenery. It definitely seems like something that would be in the style of the "GTA" series, and one I somewhat believed when I first saw it.
Outcome? Fake. As it turns out, this was just a fan-made video, that has gone over multiple name changes throughout the years – I believe a comment mentioned that this title had once been renamed to suggest it was a "GTAVI" leak.

October 28, 2012 – Polish Site Leaks “GTAV” Promotion Material and Release Date

The promotional material and release date had seemingly been made public – not through Rockstar but a Polish site (a site from Poland…not that stuff you shine stuff with). The posters include Franklin and his dog (at the time I believe he wasn’t revealed), as well as characters preparing to rob the jewellery store (revealed days earlier, per Kotaku). The tagline on the posters suggest that the game is available in Spring 2013 – (March, April, May for us southern hemisphere-ers), which at the time seemed likely as it was pretty clear the game was not coming out in 2012. It is also interesting that “Red Dead: Redemption” was also released in Spring of 2010 – so it isn’t entirely unfeasible to suggest the same for “GTAV”.
Outcome? Confirmed. I believe this is a genuine leak, the artwork is too legitimate, as well as the release date being able to be confirmed by the following…

October 30, 2012 – Rockstar Announce Spring 2013 Release Date

Rockstar Games are “proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto V is expected to launch worldwide spring 2013 for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3”.

January 31, 2013 – Rockstar Announce September 17, 2013 Release Date

Well that was quick.

August 23, 2013 – “GTAV” files discovered on Playstation Store

As Venture Beat reports, users who had preordered “GTAV” on the European version of the PlayStation Store were able to download some files as they had become available on the 22nd of August. Users mined these details, being able to discover the game's soundtrack (here is a reddit thread about it), while the game’s main theme was leaked as well - video of such has since been deleted. Due to the nature of the files, the leaks were primarily audio files, and did not leak to any actual gameplay leaks.
A day later, Playstation provided a comment on the matter, saying;
Regrettably, some people who downloaded the digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto V through the PlayStation Store in Europe were able to access certain GTA V assets. These assets were posted online. We have since removed the digital pre-order file from the PlayStation Store in Europe. We sincerely apologize to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to the spoiler content. GTA V is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with a very passionate following, and we’re looking forward to a historic launch on September 17.
Outcome? Confirmed.

September 10, 2013 – Strategy Guide Leaks Map

The world were able to discover just how big the game was when the map for the game was taken from the game’s official strategy guide. The map was posted onto reddit for all to see right here, and many were impressed – one user liking the map to a “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle”. The guide was originally meant to release with the game’s release on the 17th of September, but it seems once retailers received their copies they were able to scan and share some of the information.
Outcome? Confirmed.

September 17, 2013 - Grand Theft Auto V Released

September 22, 2013 – Micro-transactions Discovered

Reddit user u/1880 seemed to discover why it was so hard for players to earn cash in the game and discovered a file that references “cash cards”, ranging from $100,000 to $1,250,000. A copy of the file was uploaded here. However, these "cash cards" were unable to be accessed – despite the game being playable. The original post is quite hopeful that it is just something that was scrapped in development as it “seems very un-Rockstar-y” to the poster.
Unfortunately, reddit user u/Nouveau_Compte was able to provide proof that it was only for online, shared on the same thread.
Outcome? A sad confirmation.

Closing Thoughts & Some Housekeeping

That was a big read, featuring a good mix or confirmed and fake leaks - hopefully giving you the hint to stay vigilant as rumours start to increase in frequency for Grand Theft Auto VI. Having said that, you'll never know what you read that does turn out to be true. Here are a couple other links that you might also find interesting, but didn't include in the post;
GTA V Location Teased in GTAIV Manual
New Casting Call for GTAV
It seems Rockstar games seem to have a high number of rumours, leaks, and just plain lies, given their reputation and the popularity of their games. I can also tell you, the next GTA game that I am working on a post for, already has more sources and "leaks" than I found for GTAV...but this post won't be ready any time soon.
Some other housekeeping notes, I just want to find out a few things;
Other things, these posts might start slowing down - but fear not! They are still being worked on, got a few more in the pipeline. I am also going to limit these posts to games that have only been released. For those who are asking, the idea of a video format is also being explored.
Here are some previous editions of this series;
Thanks for reading, appreciate any and all feedback.
Cheers!

2020.03.12 03:40 Fluffy_Little_Fox Advice for sample hunters who use YouTube.

Point 1: Don't rely on direct download "YouTube to MP3" services like Clip Converter that limit your number of downloads per day.
Point 2: If you find a great sample on YouTube, use a program like Adobe Audition or Cool Edit Pro to record the specific parts that you want. If you make a playlist on your personal YouTube of the samples you want to keep, chances are you will come back to that playlist later to find a good chunk of those sample sources deleted or copyright striked and you can never get them back.
If you record it with a program and save it, it is already off YouTube and onto your hard drive and it can't just disappear because such and such company or record lable flagged it and got it taken down. Mute every audio source on your soundcard except for the main audio that you are recording into Audition or Cool Edit.
You dont want ambient noise from your microphone getting into your samples. Use 48 kHz and save the sample recording as a .wav and not an mp3 -- If it is JUST a loop. If it's a full song you're trying to record, then you should use mp3. 192 kbps is fine for a 5 minute song. Set your soundcard volume to 30 percent. Set the Video on YT to 50 percent. When you have the finished recording the sample. Normalize it to 50 db in Audition or Cool Edit. You can fuss with the sample volume later in Reason's "Dr Rex" (if it's a chop) or in Ableton (if it's a loop - use Rewire mode to link them up). You will have to balance it against drums in and instruments in your mix anyway. Sample quality itself is not a big deal. Unless it's super muddled VHS rips - then you may need to apply a noise floor to knock out some hiss. Your instruments and drums are going to mask that dirtiness and hiss anyhow.
Point 3: Don't believe that you have to stick to 70s Motown soul music or whatever. You can find loops anywhere. You can find stuff to chop and resequence ANYWHERE. It can be in any language too. There's dope loops on some obscure 70s russian sci-fi OST just waiting for you to find them. There's a dope Chinese psychedelic song that's begging to be flipped and restructured into something new and interesting. Don't just stick to one pool of music when you're digging. 70s motown soul is not the only thing out there to make boom bap with.
Point 4: Who cares if the source is "dumb" or "corny" - I've seen videos of Dubs Banger flipping a sample from a Sesame Street record of Big Bird going to an orchestra. I've seen samples get flipped from some random ass Hindi kid's song about a jumping puppy (Kuka Pila). Who cares if it's some silly kiddie crap. Who cares as long as you flip that shit into something unique.
Point 5: If you spend your entire time moping because "Somebody else got to that sample before I did" and you really believe that to be unique you must never loop a sample that's already been looped, or flip a sample that's already been flipped - you will stay stuck in a rut. It doesn't matter if so and so already used that sample. What can you bring to that sample? How would YOU spice it up? Your drums. Your backing instruments. Your technique and approach. That's what gives the sample individuality. Not the fact that "Nobody else has used it yet."
Point 5: You don't need the latest and greatest DAW software. You can still do great with an outdated copy of Reason 4.0 and an obsolete version of Recycle. An outdated version of Ableton. Use what you can learn easily. New versions can add too much complication.
Point 6: You don't need the newest and trendiest gear. You want scratches? Don't go buy a Numark NS7 for 1000 dollars when you can get those scratches easily with a cheap DJ-Tech VTT-101 usb platter and an outdated version of Traktor. Who cares if it isn't motorized. Add the kick-back effect in post. Use the tempo ramp in Cool Edit that lets you edit the slope with dots. Select the front part of your scratch's wave form, ramp against - meaning you align the dots so it feels like the slope goes up-hill. This will add the sense of kick-back, like the motorization of the platter.
And you don't need a fancy Akai MPK 249 when you can get an Axiom for cheaper. Work with what you have and what you can afford. Don't go blowing a fuckload of money on pro studio speakers when a cheap set of Sony "SS-B1000" speakers will do just fine. You want midrange too? Go buy some cheap KLH "403 A" 3-way speakers. Run them off a Behringer "Xenyx 802" mixer. Need headphones? Get cheap Sennheiser "280 HDs" and look on EBay for some aftermarket cloth cups to go on them. Have a back-up pair with the solid fake leather (pleather) cups. The "clothies" will be your vocal headphones when you need to hear your own voice through the cans (you perform vocals much better when you can hear yourself along with the music). The "leathers" will be your isolating headphones when you need to keep ambient room noise out. You don't need the fanciest stuff to have a decent personal studio.
Point 7: Don't develop "beat / sample ADHD" - in other words, work on turning the handful of samples you already have into finished beats. If you spend every single day crate digging on YouTube you will finish nothing and you will drive yourself crazy with the amount of stuff you have. You can't sample everything. You can't get to that rare loop before somebody else does. Finish your projects. You're gunna go through 4 or 5 different incarnations of a "beat" anyway. Each version of what you save will be progressively better. Use a number to signify what version you are at. Like "SpaceshipYamato-take-12." You can't focus on making one beat really really good if you are hopping between projects and samples like a squirrel trying to pick up every acorn in the forest.
Point 8: Count out your bars for the amount of time and the sections. 16 bars to a verse. 4 or 8 bars to a chorus (hook). That's if you even want a chorus in the track at all. You could make a track that's just a straight 32 bars with no chorus section in it. (A chorus would have a differentiation to it - a backing string melody, or a change to the hi-hats, something that tells the listener "the hook is coming").
To test out if the length of a sample is a bar - can you say a full sentence of words to it? That one sentence IS the bar. Two PAIRS of sentences is not a bar. That's two individual bars. There are sometimes inner-rhymes within a bar. But having two rhymes inside of the one sample loop phrase doesn't magically make it TWO bars. It's still ONE.
Think of House of Pain - Jump Around as an example. That backing sample goes "Rum Bum Bum - Rum Dum Bum Lum" - You can count out a full 1, 2, 3, 4, - to just that one looped phrase with your fingers. That's a bar. 4 repetitions of of that "Rum Bum Bum - Rum Dum Bum Lum" phrase is still 4 bars. Don't get it mixed up and think 4 repetitions of a sample loop is the bar. You'll fuck yourself up thinking that way and wind up using 8 bars when you really only wanted the 4.
(Bar 01)
Pack it up, pack it in, let me begin /
Rum bum bum - Rum dum bum lum
(Bar 02)
I came to win, battle me that's a sin /
Rum bum bum - Rum dum bum lum
(Bar 03)
I won't ever slack up, punk you better back up /
Rum bum bum - Rum dum bum lum
(Bar 04)
Try n' play the role n' yo - the whole crew'll act up /
Rum bum bum - Rum dum bum lum
Test your bars to fit with a vocal pattern, even if it's just nonsense -- "Hup dup bah, budda bobba dah" - Skup lup dah, budduh cuppa rah." Each line should fit the same amount of mental space and time space as the previous line.
If you sampled "Spaceship Yamato - Overture" at 3:33 to 3:44, it goes....
Raawwwn Rawwww, Rint Rawn Wah - Rawn Rawww - Raw Rawn Wuh /
That's one bar of sample. If you cut it and loop it twice - it's two bars. Loop it 2 more times and it's 4 bars.
That one sample phrase is the bar. Saying a sentence to that phrase is the bar.
(01)
We're stranded out in space, the human race don't gotta home now /
Raawwwn Rawwww - Rint Rawn Wah - Rawn Rawww - Raw Rawn Wuh
(02)
We gotta find a way to make it work, but we don't know how /
Raawwwn Rawwww - Rint Rawn Wah - Rawn Rawww - Raw Rawn Wuh
........
Sample CHOPS typically have 3 or 2 repeats of a first phrase, then an end phrase.
If you CHOPPED the song "Het Huis Anubis" it might go like...
Het... Het... Anu - Vee - Vom
That's one full phrase.
Play with it, switch it up. Make a whole new pattern for the chorus part. Make it fit the same "repeat, repeat, repeat - different" cycle.
When Mr. Green chopped that jewish children's choir for the beat Pacewon used for "Children Sing" - that sample went "Reh-Reh-Wah-Wah - Yehh - Ie-Yeeh
That's the whole phrase through the song, but Mr. Green played with parts in some bars to make the sample "dance" - Rih-Rit-Wah-Wah, Rih-Wahh-Ieehhh" - it keeps the beat from being too repetitive.

2020.03.12 01:40 MysterySongSearch [TOMT][SONG][80s/90s?] Jpop song with lyrics "Wo ai ni", male singer, possibly from an anime

ETA: Vocaroo of the chorus https://voca.ro/kWkYtWB9CZq
Trying to find an old Japanese song. I downloaded it around 2002 while looking for songs by Seki Toshihiko but it was mislabeled and he is NOT the singer. So it could be by someone with a similar name. There's a good chance it's from an anime soundtrack but it could be from anywhere. (The mp3 is long gone now)
The chorus begins with "Wo ai ni" and it's a Chinese style/influenced song, but it's definitely Japanese.
It has a male singer and it's not a duet.
The chorus is structured like this but I don't remember the other words:
Wo ai ni (additional words)
(second line)
Wo ai ni (additional words)
(second line)
I've already looked through Ranma 1/2 and Fushigi Yuugi songs and it's none of those. Any help appreciated!!

2019.10.08 22:28 Thundard The ultimate Bogdan Raczynski "unreleased discography"

The ultimate Bogdan Raczynski
https://preview.redd.it/8lcys4vikdr31.png?width=610&format=png&auto=webp&s=c47680d5e9e3c854eaab3c9c3373cc470ee6fbb8
The ultimate Bogdan Raczynski "unreleased discography". (aka "The Bogdan Raczynski reverse engineering)
//I translate my french with Google translate. Sorry for the misunderstanding//
Hello ^_^ This is my first post on watmm
In view of a future announced nuclear disaster, I empty my old hard drives on the net. At the moment, I'm posting the complete Bogdan Raczynski release (no licensed only, of course) on a Youtube account. I have many releases without names, without info ... so I decided to recreate his "Unreleased discography". I hope there are big fans among you to help me (or relatives of Bogdan?). Here is the "journal of my research". (note: In case of error, I would not hesitate to delete the video to correct it. I do not care about the number of views, only comments and exchange interest me).
This page does not contain the following releases: CAT 082, CAT 084, CAT 085, CAT 089, CAT 102, CAT 113, CAT 115, CAT 120, CAT 131, CAT 174, CAT 193, DISC2.5, BRCOM 2, WARPLP69, CAI-5034-0, HEFTYWHITE003, STI008, TRICK025, MHUNT18T, AMBUSH X01, HORSE035-2, GI-94, XLT 540, ACIWAX17, A-UL99 and releases on Bandcamp.
-------------------------------------- ////////////////////////////////////// --------------------------------------
I started with "Bogdan Raczynski - Y34K". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aaaza4pf-js This is a tape I found on Soulseek in April 2005 (a few days from the Rephlex label night in Ostend, Belgium... where I met Ceephax (drunk) and Bogdan pissed off having to pay the bathroom entrance ...) There is no information on the net about it (except boardsofelectronica, my old blog). Let's go on the Wayback Machine!
I start by looking on the old pages of Bogdan's official website (in 2001). https://web.archive.org/web/20010830073345fw_/http://www.bogdanraczynski.com/bogdan-raczynski-discography-album-singles.php Although this is the official site, this discography seems not to have been written by Bogdan at the sight of the lack of detail and information. We learn that Bogdan has created his music in two countries: Japan and the USA (Nebraska). They are listed by labels.
--------------------------------------
LABEL: JUE WANG KUE JWK309 - FO QI NG (4LP / 8T - 2000) apparently released only in china. a porn soundtrack. /// In China? I did not find anything on this "Jue wang kue". Maybe we have to look for the old Chinese search engines from the year 2000 on archive.org ... by translating Jue Wang Kue into sinograms or kanji ... or, by asking a Chinese porn specialist ... good luck!
--------------------------------------
LABEL: THE OPERATIVE ***001 - KACHOUCHAN (CD - 1997) the first release on Bogdan's label during his time in Japan. experimental synthesization and supposedly heavily influenced by nature, yet very "beaty" and hard. ***002 - LOVE MELODIES NINTENDO (CD - 1998) made under the "[email protected]" moniker, this release is heavy on the melodies and even heavier on thrashy breaks. very collectable as it contains tracks which came out on BOKU MO WAKARAN released on Rephlex. ***003 - DENKI SHINGON (CD - 1998) violent feedback mixed with japanese game shows. extremely violent. extremely rare. /// There ... concentrate, it's the mess! I did not find any official information on "Kachouchan". But, I found "Love Melodies Nintendo" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwBcE8YhjMc and "Denki Shingon" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRGSiOqaG9Y on Soulseek. I also found a release under the name "Bogdan Raczynski - The operative - Agent 30" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_7Xqc-01aw
The description of "Denki Shingon" on the old site indicates: violent feedback mixed with japanese game shows. The only one of these 3 albums containing samples of japanese game shows is the supposed "Kachouchan". So I suspect "Kachouchan" to actually be "Denki Shingon". https://youtu.be/-_7Xqc-01aw?t=250 https://youtu.be/-_7Xqc-01aw?t=275 https://youtu.be/-_7Xqc-01aw?t=623 But, the description of "Kachouchan" also says: "... during his time in Japan ... and supposedly heavily influenced by nature ..." https://youtu.be/-_7Xqc-01aw?t=1254 https://youtu.be/-_7Xqc-01aw?t=1082
Another clue: Denki Shingon, supposed to be released in 1998, contains tracks from netlabels, available in .it, .s3m ... files, composed and released between 1995 and 1997 (year of release of Kachouchan). Which amplifies my suspicions. This would also prove that all releases traveling on Soulseek are badly renamed.
Who is Kachouchan? Who is Denki Shingon? I do not know ... what do you think? Given the copyright claim I received for "Love Melodies Nintendo" and its description "contains tracks which came out on BOKU MO WAKARAN released on Rephlex" I confirm that it is indeed this one. I intend to redo these videos once the mystery solved. By remastering Denki "Kachouchan" Shingon as I did for the other videos, because I found all the soundtracker files thanks to the wayback machine ...
--------------------------------------
LABEL: r3q R3Q001 - ??? (Tape - 1996) no information available. R3Q002 - STANDY BY FOR OPERATOR (Tape - 1996) Bogdan flexes on Side B and Scott Forbes casts on Side A. no other info known. R3Q005 - DROP SHADOW II (Tape - 1996) another recording of a live performance, done by scott forbes and bogdan raczynski on the streets using battery-powered gear. a roland mc-202, roland tr-606 and a distortion pedal were used. very fresh. R3Q006 - ANT_RAID_5000 (LIVE) (Tape - 1997) a live performance. sounds very different from Bogdan's current Rephlex-released music. /// In your opinion, which of these tapes circulate under the name "Y34K"? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aaaza4pf-js (Unless Y34K is the second step of Aphasiac (see below) ... in this case, I am wrong). No information on the net ... but, digging into the name of the samples of old Bogdan tracks (.it, s3m ..) and some NFO on scene.org, I found several links: In the tracks of "Teddy bear magic", one of these EP released in 1997 at Monotonik under his nickname "Karl", I found: www.sito.org/~ronin www.sito.org/~r3q
"Wayback machine" time! https://web.archive.org/web/19970505133622/http://www.sito.org/~r3q/sound.html /// r3q 001 - Raised in hell (Tape - 1997) this is r3q's first cassette, released in january, 1997. sixty minutes of madness by aphasiac and doogie howitzer. mostly gabbehardcore with a few slower pieces. 'blue light special' is a buyers perspective on large shopping centers. also there are two pieces created by feeding live piano through a distortion pedal with eq. r3q 002 - standby for operator (Tape - ????) this tape is the most recent release. another sixty minutes of doogie and aphasiac. this tape is a change in tone and scope as these two redefine their sounds. doogie's distorted hard-hop dominates side A, and aphasiac fills the reverse with troubled jungle and darkside terror. this is considered by r3q insiders to be the release to order. /// Well ... r3q (USA - Nebraska)! Let's go back to my mysterious tape "Y34K" which may be hiding here. A little further down on Bogdan's old discography page, we find the label "Aphasiac". But according to the old page of the label r3q, Aphasiac is another pseudonym Bogdan who made live recordings on tape, duet with Doogie Howitzer (would it be Scott Forbes, as mentioned above?) Nebraska. In Youtube comments of "Y34K", "artificial object" wrote: "bogdan once mentioned in an interview that Rephlex at first did not accept the stuff he felt like he produced music that he thought they would like (the typical drum machine 808 acid stuff So what happened 2 days later? Boku Mo Wakaran. "
I continue my exploration ... and I find this page: https://web.archive.org/web/19980206190108/http://www.sito.org/r3q/releases.html
We learn several things: - "Ant_raid_5000" is the name of the Bogdan / Doogie duo (or, another pseudonym of Bogdan?). The release "r3q 006" is called "Insecticide free". - "r3q 005" supposed to be DROP SHADOW II is named here "drop shadow". Could it be because r3q 003 (not found) is the first "Drop Shadow"? I do not know... - "r3q 004" is a live Scott Forbes ... nothing to do with Bogdan but, Scott Forbes seems not to be Doogie ...
I dig deeper: https://web.archive.org/web/19980206190115/http://www.sito.org/r3q/performances.html We learn two things: - ant_raid_5000: live @ byte'n'bite cafe "bogdan raczynski's noize p.a. august 1997" - drop shadow: live acid in downtown omaha "performed by bogdan raczynski and scott forbes fridays summer 1997"
I dig deeper deeper: https://web.archive.org/web/20000818065758/http://www.sito.org/events/ QuasiProto June 1997. Electronic music by Bogdan Racynski, Scott Forbes, Maureen Evans-Hansen. Video and film from around the net. QuasiProto2 took place in November 1997. Small electronic art party at the Medusa Project Gallery in Omaha, Nebraska. /// What the f ... is "QuasiProto"? "Video and movie from around the net?" I do a search ... and BOOOOM! Scott Forbes and Aphasiac https://www.sito.org/events/quasiproto/ Hello Bogdan ^^ https://www.sito.org/events/quasiproto/bogsct1.jpg https://www.sito.org/events/quasiproto/bogsct2.jpg https://www.sito.org/events/quasiproto/bogsctbar2.jpg
"Drop Shadow" is the live recording of the QuasiProto event (Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, June 28th, 1997). But ... is it Y34K?
WHO IS "Y34K"?
--------------------------------------
LABEL: ICE.CLIMBER
N/A - N/A (.it, .xm - 1997) this was a very broad project output mainly via the net. it contained web-pages, mp3's for downloading, tracked files for downloading (it/xm), cd's and a few live performances in japan. /// An error on the official website? "ice.climber" is a pseudo of Bogdan. The only official release with this nickname is: "Teddy bear magic" on Monotonik (16/12/1997). More details in the section dedicated to Monotonik.
--------------------------------------
LABEL: APHASIAC
001 - Aphasiac - ? (Tape - 1996) contains tracks which are most likely his fastest and most violent to date. makes speedcore and gabber sound like babies pooping. ridiculously rare as it was given only to friends. 002 - Aphasiac - ? (Tape - 1997) no information available. ///As I said in the part r3q, Aphasiac is not a label but, one of the pseudonyms of Bogdan. Here is the cover of the first tape of Aphasiac https://web.archive.org/web/20010830073345im_/http://www.bogdanraczynski.com/aphasiac-thumb2.gif And here is the one of the second https://web.archive.org/web/20010615212024im_/http://www.bogdanraczynski.com/aphasiac-thumb.jpg
On the first one, it says: Y33K That would mean that the second is Y34K? Still, there is no "fastest and most violent to date. makes speedcore and gabber sound like babies pooping" on this recording. Mystery...
WHO IS "Y34K"?
--------------------------------------
LABEL: PANDA BEAR
KF13 - RABBITS (2LP - 19??) KF46 - RAVIN FOR RADISHES (CD - 19??) KF79 - PENIS GODZILLA FORCE (EP - 19??) KF1012 - PANTY PILFERING (2LP - 19??) KF1315 - JEWISH HIP HOP COMM PTY (CD - 19??) /// After hours of research ... NOTHING. Absolutely nothing about these 5 releases. "Panda bear" would be a Bogdan nickname? The KF label? No idea...

In chronological order. I would adjust the order of this list as my discoveries progress. The first pieces of Bogdan are published on the label 2k-kookie kontrol under the pseudo "Mopias 3" and "Karl". Bogdan then posts his songs to TRaxx, who will later change his name to PURE.

TANGERINE MEDALLIONS / bogdanraczynski remix contest (2000)
This is a collection of compositions by the "losers" of the "remix contest" launched on bogdanraczynski.com to win t-shirts or, appear on this 7 ", limited edition https://www.discogs.com/en/Bogdan-Raczynski-Untitled/release/133162 The 2 winners are The Flashbulb (from "Alphabasic") and Nautilis (from "Planet Mu").
The list of these "losers" can be found here: https://web.archive.org/web/20010801234001fw_/http://www.bogdanraczynski.com/remix-contest/bogdan-raczynski-medallions.php
At the time, I started to save them but ... lack of time ... I saved only 9 out of 53 (which I will post soon on Youtube). Given the list of participants, I regret very much !! (especially Kettel and Terminal11 ... as well as many artists coming from micromusic.net with whom I will try to investigate ...).
Here is this list (I put a * next to the remixes that I have)
8b - Fuck you DJ (beta2 mix) * Absolut - Untitled Adam Savage - untitled (smb15) * Agent N - Kimi wa (reprz mix) Aidsbot2000 - Bogdan mix 2 * Anboi - Imperialist takeover mix * Aslan - BR mix Bias - Bw2 (4etap mix) * Bipolar - Thinking of you thinking of me (bifteki house mix) * Bollason - Bmw 3 mix Brandon - Unsatisfied consumer (71 rmx) Business process Smb-bmw (business process live edit - 1) * Cable Bank VS Bogdan Raczynski Udontkayremix Chad Cells - Untitled Containa - Samurai masu biitsu (containas muppet rifle mix) * Craig Jakubowski - Temp36 Daan E - Smb1 (black belt style mix) Daniel777 - Kragondick=) Ghengis - Angry black man remix * Hikarutsunematsu - brbrbr mix Ian B - Ibiza tm mix Ill Cosby - I cry bye bye remix Ishio Kudashi - Miso shiri (ferguson hall survellance cam repro) Jerohme Spye - Auk (nan no tame ni boku to honyaku) Kas - Misoshiru (tidy bunkbed remix) Kettel - Reim mix (bmw4) Kevin Parish - Doodoo Bogdan mix Kevin Rearden - AM radio remix Luke Hall - Bogmixtwo Mat Foglia - Humfree loves kimi mix MC Iedh - Fnck trance mix (smb12) Mikrosopht - Native sukrpunt Mookid - I cry bye bye (Mookid shy mix) Muniak - Digital clip mix Niels Jorgen Larsen - Dragon kick mix Normal Position - Or just for fun Notlad VS Bogdan Raczynski - Kimi wa kibbles n bitts Oldboy - Boggler Peteone23 VS Bogdan Raczynski - Gaijin sabetsu gaikoku jichu Pro(xy) - Samurai piano beetz Punkt - Untitled Qyme - You as a prosthetic me remix Riccardo Antolini - Gliese (freeby 2) Ryo-co - Ryo-co gives you more Sabastian Boaz - Honyaku shika Sebastian Gutierrez - Thinking Smoke Cella - kimi (Smoke cella fyshi miks) Strek VS Atzmo - You as an out of control extension of me (bt) Suburban Trash - remix 96khz Supervenience - smb14 Takashi Egawano - Tsurugi (hentai mix) Terminal11 featuring Widget Phreak - There are many things....mix Wayne P Ulmer III - Thinking of you thinking of me

And now ... the really obscure part. Many soundtracker files that belonged to Bogdan hang on Soulseek (leaks?). I was able to rebuild albums / EP thanks to them. But, in these collections, some files do not contain any information or are not Bogdan's style ... and other oddities (hidden messages in Polish, origin of Bogdan Raczynski).

My opinion: This is maybe a remix of Auspex? Mixyellow Thushhoe? Or, a beta version of a piece of Bogdan? This is very possible because, if it's a remix, it is not in the "Tangerine Medallions" list.

Other stuff:
On NNDB, we read this information: Other projects include composing the music for the Playstation game Nucleus (2007). https://www.nndb.com/people/456/000113117/
Nucleus is a game available only on the PS Store of the PS3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9itVz5oqHI
Confirmation: https://twitter.com/bogdanraczynski/status/659346992049561600
I am absolutely looking for this OST!
-------------------------------------- ////////////////////////////////////// --------------------------------------
Summary of my questions:
What is the real title of Y34K? Which one is "Kachouchan" or "Denki Shingon"? Information about the JUE WANG KUE label? "The Operative" is it a pseudonym of Bogdan or, the name of his own label? Panda bear, myth or reality? Has anyone saved the remixes "Tangerine Medallions"? Insecticide free? Have I forgotten something?
I stop here for now ... I will continue my research in the depths of the internet. If you have additional information or something to add, do not hesitate.

The ultimate Bogdan Raczynski
Bogdan and Richard
No idea...

The ultimate Bogdan Raczynski "unreleased discography". (aka "The Bogdan Raczynski reverse engineering)
//I translate my french with Google translate. Sorry for the misunderstanding//
Hello ^_^
In view of a future announced nuclear disaster, I empty my old hard drives on the net. At the moment, I'm posting the complete Bogdan Raczynski release (no licensed only, of course) on a Youtube account. I have many releases without names, without info ... so I decided to recreate his "Unreleased discography". I hope there are big fans among you to help me (or relatives of Bogdan?). Here is the "journal of my research". (note: In case of error, I would not hesitate to delete the video to correct it. I do not care about the number of views, only comments and exchange interest me).
This page does not contain the following releases:
CAT 082, CAT 084, CAT 085, CAT 089, CAT 102, CAT 113, CAT 115, CAT 120, CAT 131, CAT 174, CAT 193, DISC2.5, BRCOM 2, WARPLP69, CAI-5034-0, HEFTYWHITE003, STI008, TRICK025, MHUNT18T, AMBUSH X01, HORSE035-2, GI-94, XLT 540, ACIWAX17, A-UL99 and releases on Bandcamp.
-------------------------------------- //////////////////////////////// --------------------------------------
I started with "Bogdan Raczynski - Y34K". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aaaza4pf-js
This is a tape I found on Soulseek in April 2005 (a few days from the Rephlex label night in Ostend, Belgium... where I met Ceephax (drunk) and Bogdan pissed off having to pay the bathroom entrance ...) There is no information on the net about it (except boardsofelectronica, my old blog). Let's go on the Wayback Machine!
I start by looking on the old pages of Bogdan's official website (in 2001).
https://web.archive.org/web/20010830073345fw_/http://www.bogdanraczynski.com/bogdan-raczynski-discography-album-singles.php
Although this is the official site, this discography seems not to have been written by Bogdan at the sight of the lack of detail and information. We learn that Bogdan has created his music in two countries: Japan and the USA (Nebraska).
They are listed by labels. -------------------------------------- LABEL: JUE WANG KUE JWK309 - FO QI NG (4LP / 8T - 2000) apparently released only in china. a porn soundtrack. /// In China? I did not find anything on this "Jue wang kue". Maybe we have to look for the old Chinese search engines from the year 2000 on archive.org ... by translating Jue Wang Kue into sinograms or kanji ... or, by asking a Chinese porn specialist ... good luck! -------------------------------------- LABEL: THE OPERATIVE ***001 - KACHOUCHAN (CD - 1997) the first release on Bogdan's label during his time in Japan. experimental synthesization and supposedly heavily influenced by nature, yet very "beaty" and hard. I also found a release under the name "Bogdan Raczynski - The operative - Agent 30" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_7Xqc-01aw The description of "Denki Shingon" on the old site indicates: violent feedback mixed with japanese game shows.
-------------------------------------- LABEL: r3q R3Q001 - ???
I dig deeper: https://web.archive.org/web/19980206190115/http://www.sito.org/r3q/performances.html
We learn two things: - ant_raid_5000: live @ byte'n'bite cafe "bogdan raczynski's noize p.a. august 1997" - drop shadow: live acid in downtown omaha "performed by bogdan raczynski and scott forbes fridays summer 1997"
I dig deeper deeper: https://web.archive.org/web/20000818065758/http://www.sito.org/events/ QuasiProto June 1997. Electronic music by Bogdan Racynski, Scott Forbes, Maureen Evans-Hansen. Video and film from around the net. QuasiProto2 took place in November 1997. Small electronic art party at the Medusa Project Gallery in Omaha, Nebraska. /// What the f ... is "QuasiProto"? "Video and movie from around the net?" I do a search ... and BOOOOM! Scott Forbes and Aphasiac https://www.sito.org/events/quasiproto/ Hello Bogdan ^^ https://www.sito.org/events/quasiproto/bogsct1.jpg https://www.sito.org/events/quasiproto/bogsct2.jpg https://www.sito.org/events/quasiproto/bogsctbar2.jpg "Drop Shadow" is the live recording of the QuasiProto event (Omaha, Nebraska on Saturday, June 28th, 1997). But ... is it Y34K?
WHO IS "Y34K"? -------------------------------------- LABEL: ICE.CLIMBER N/A - N/A (.it, .xm - 1997) this was a very broad project output mainly via the net. it contained web-pages, mp3's for downloading, tracked files for downloading (it/xm), cd's and a few live performances in japan. /// An error on the official website? "ice.climber" is a pseudo of Bogdan. The only official release with this nickname is: "Teddy bear magic" on Monotonik (16/12/1997). More details in the section dedicated to Monotonik. -------------------------------------- LABEL: APHASIAC 001 - Aphasiac - ? (Tape - 1996) contains tracks which are most likely his fastest and most violent to date. makes speedcore and gabber sound like babies pooping. ridiculously rare as it was given only to friends. 002 - Aphasiac - ? (Tape - 1997) no information available. /// As I said in the part r3q, Aphasiac is not a label but, one of the pseudonyms of Bogdan.
-------------------------------------- LABEL: PANDA BEAR KF13 - RABBITS (2LP - 19??) KF46 - RAVIN FOR RADISHES (CD - 19??) KF79 - PENIS GODZILLA FORCE (EP - 19??) KF1012 - PANTY PILFERING (2LP - 19??) KF1315 - JEWISH HIP HOP COMM PTY (CD - 19??) /// After hours of research ... NOTHING. Absolutely nothing about these 5 releases. "Panda bear" would be a Bogdan nickname? The KF label? No idea...

-------------------------------------- //////////////////////////////// --------------------------------------
Summary of my questions: What is the real title of Y34K? Which one is "Kachouchan" or "Denki Shingon"? Information about the JUE WANG KUE label? "The Operative" is it a pseudonym of Bogdan or, the name of his own label? Panda bear, myth or reality? Has anyone saved the remixes "Tangerine Medallions"? Insecticide free? Have I forgotten something?
I stop here for now ... I will continue my research in the depths of the internet. If you have additional information or something to add, do not hesitate.

2019.09.15 17:32 cofie Debunking Common Misconceptions about the Billboard Hot 100

Hi popheads! This is a post for debunking common misconceptions about the Billboard Hot 100.
As reading the charts becomes more and more mainstream in music discussion communities, so do misconceptions and outright lies—not just innocent ignorance—about the charts. There are many charts that are now entering conversations in communities across the web, but in this post, I’ll put my focus on the Billboard Hot 100, arguably the most recognised music chart in pop culture communities. (As a result, everything will be written in the context of the United States.) This post will be presented in this format:
Scenario: [with question/statement at the end]
AnsweRebuttal: […]
I decided on these “common misconceptions” by simply habitually looking at the replies of Billboard chart threads in pop culture circles, such as pophead and ATRL (as well as replies to tweets about charts from accounts like Chart Data), and then guessing the most common ones from there. I also asked a few friends in the popheads Discord server about what they found were common misconceptions.
I recommend reading my Hot 100 guide before reading this post if you aren't already well-acquainted with the chart.
With that being said, let’s begin!

Scenario 1—The sole streaming service and top 10’s

Emily is a pop singer. Emily releases a new song and it debuts at #7 on Spotify on Friday. It continues to chart at about that same number (never below #10) for the rest of the week, into Thursday. However, the song debuts on the following Hot 100 at #24, easily missing the top 10. How come Emily’s song failed to debut top 10 or even top 20 despite comfortably staying in the top 10 on Spotify? Isn’t Spotify big in the US?
There are many reasons why this can happen. But it typically boils down to something simple: Spotify is simply not big enough to guarantee anybody a top 10. This is the same for every other streaming service in the United States.
Spotify is one of many streaming services that are available here in the United States. Consumers in this country take advantage of this, and as a result, there are multiple major streaming services, which causes situations like Scenario 1. As of August 2018, Spotify and Apple Music only make up about 75% of the American audio streaming market. Amazon Music has been growing in share since then, with some guessing its streaming market share to be up to 15%.
Another thing to mention is songs that do well on Spotify don’t necessarily always do well on other streaming services due to differing demographics. Apple Music, which is about as big as Spotify in the US, hosts a larger rap, R&B, and reggaetón streaming audience than Spotify. Amazon Music hosts a larger rock and country streaming audience than basically most other major streaming services.
Another thing to mention is that songs that are big on streaming aren’t necessarily big on the other two metrics—sales and radio. For example: despite his streaming popularity across multiple services, XXXTentacion’s single “SAD!” debuted at #17 on the Hot 100 because of low sales and negligible radio.
One final thing to mention is that yes, sometimes using the more visible services (e.g. YouTube and Spotify, which both reveal their numbers) can be helpful to see general trends for a song as they are two of the biggest services in the US (Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music). But like I said, you must consider demographic differences and overall performance on other services.
All in all, in order to debut top 10 or top 20 with a song charting at #7 on Spotify, you need similar popularity across streaming services or an overall good balance between all three metrics.

Scenario 2—The bias

John is a popular singer. He releases a new song and it debuts at #15 on the Hot 100. The song drops to #68 the next week. You, a stan of his, are angry. You say: “Billboard is biased! They don’t like my fave! The song is actually very popular.” You believe the Hot 100 is biased against your fave.
The Hot 100 is a data-based chart relying on data provided by Nielsen SoundScan. It is compiled by Billboard, a music trade magazine. Yes, Billboard does have editorials and may use humour on occasion, but the Hot 100 does not rely on any form of editorial opinion or quality control from Billboard. The only editorial opinion that factors into the Hot 100 is that of the music consumers and what they decide to consume. Ask yourself these logical questions:
If you want your fave to chart high, buy and stream their music.

Scenario 3—The social media viewcounts

A song goes viral on social media, resulting in a widely popular “challenge” and many popular memes. The meme bases its footing in services like Twitter and Instagram, where shareable content is all the rage. The song experiences massive popularity. The song jumps into the top 10. Surely social media views must count towards the Hot 100, right?
Wrong. Let’s begin with the simple: Most social media services do have view counts presented on videos uploaded to their services. But these views do not count towards the Hot 100 at all. They never have. Ask Billboard or check any in-depth article about the Hot 100.
Here’s the second face of this, though: typically, these videos get reuploaded to YouTube, where those views do count. These YouTube videos are typically concurrently popular with the meme on social media services. These YouTube videos are called user-generated content (UGC). UGC clips are then matched with a Content ID, which is a system on YouTube that matches the video’s audio to a reference file of a song provided by a label. You can see this in action by going on literally any popular TikTok compilation on YouTube, clicking “Show More”, and then reading the description. The songs listed there have been claimed via Content ID. And if those songs have a UPC or an ISRC attached to them, chances are that SoundScan is tracking those streams.

Scenario 4—The digital sales

Denice releases a song. It sells well on iTunes, staying at around #3 for the entire week. But the song debuts at #30 on the Hot 100. Her sales were pretty good though?
The sales were relatively good. Let’s not forget that in 2018, digital song sales only accounted for about 5% of all US music industry revenue and that typical digital sales #1’s sell below 40 000 per week. Digital sales don’t make up the majority of the Hot 100’s points. Digital sales have been losing popularity in the US since 2015 and streaming and airplay figures are big enough to dilute sales’ impact.
But even then, digital sales are not the only metric of the Hot 100. Billboard doesn’t give any bonuses or multipliers for being top 10 on iTunes for an entire week. It’s also worth mentioning that songs doing well on digital sales don’t necessarily do as well on streaming. It’s not uncommon for pop-leaning genres like adult contemporary to chart top 50 on iTunes while not charting comfortably on streaming services.
Also, iTunes isn’t the sole major digital sales retailer in the United States; Amazon has an MP3 download section that also happens to sell quite a bit. Even at digital sales’ peak in 2012, iTunes took up 64% of the digital sales market in Q2; iTunes was by far the biggest, but it didn’t hold as massive of a monopoly on digital sales as most people think.
Finally, difference in sales between top sellers are far smaller than most people think. We can look at the Hot 100 dated 31 August 2019. In the article posted that previewed the top 10, Billboard revealed the digital sales of the entire top 5. “Bad Guy” was at #7 in sales with 20k copies but was just 2k sales away from “Old Town Road” which was at #4 with 22k copies. In terms of chart points, this is rather minuscule. It is important to consider the actual numbers and not just the positions.

Scenario 5—The #1 peak and the #2 peak

Let’s use a real-life situation. Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie released the single “ME!”, which peaked at #2 behind Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’s “Old Town Road Remix”. What happened to it after that week is not the background in this scenario. Does the fact that it peaked at #2 make it not as big as a few other #1’s from earlier in the year?
Not exactly. The fact is, “ME!”’s first week had more than enough points (193k sales, 50.7mil streams, 54.1mil audience) to place it at #1 in most other weeks during the year, ignoring “Old Town Road”. “Old Town Road” is an anomaly; singles don’t typically lead over 10 weeks, and if they do, it’s often that the single is blocking a few big #2’s or that the competition simply isn’t sizing up.
Just because a single peaked at #1 doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always bigger than a #2 regardless of circumstance. Fantasia Barrino’s #1 single “I Believe” had a strong first week, but it tumbled down the charts shortly after, only spent 10 weeks on the chart, and didn’t enter the Year-End Hot 100 for that year. “I Believe” is, quite obviously, not bigger than every #2-peaking single.

Scenario 5.5—The peaks

Song A peaks at #1 and spends 15 weeks on the chart, with a chart run of 1-5-9-13-15-21-22-29-34-50-55-60-70-84-100-X. Song B peaks at #8 and spends 34 weeks on the chart, with a chart run of 49-16-8-10-9-9-10-8-10-10-11-10-8-10-12-15-17-16-13-16-16-17-17-17-20-23-24-26-26-26-30-35-41-50-[recurrent]. Obviously, because Song A peaked at #1 and Song B peaked at #8, Song A must be bigger than Song B, right?
Most likely wrong. Songs that linger around, even if they peak relatively low (like Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3”) obviously are more popular than songs that enter at #1 and then quickly slide down the charts. In other words, slow and steady wins the race. More time on the charts means more accumulated points.
A song can have 45 million streams one week and then eventually only have about 7 million streams by the sixth week. A song can also have 7 million streams one week and then grow to about 30 million streams and stay in that range for multiple weeks before descending again. Obviously, the song with more consistent and longer performance is going to have better results in the long term than a song that peaks high and then makes a quick descent.

Scenario 6—The stilted chart debut

John is a pop artist. He releases a song that proves to be a moderate hit; decent streaming figures and decent sales performance; radio hasn’t caught up yet. However, the same week he releases his song, another artist, Ali, drops their album which proves very successful and causes an album bomb. John’s song, despite performing pretty well on its own, debuts at #35 the Hot 100 simply because of Ali’s album bomb. John’s song clearly wasn’t big.
Not necessarily. When looking at this scenario, it is very important to consider possible context for that week.
When Post Malone released his second album beerbongs & bentleys, he broke streaming records and caused a large album bomb in the first week (12 debuts in the top 40). This in turn obviously pushed a lot of songs down the chart, even though these songs were already popular on their own. For example: NBA YoungBoy’s single “Overdose” was released the same week as the Post Malone album bomb, and it debuted at #77. Without context, “Overdose” didn’t do so hot, right? Not exactly. The next week, after multiple Post Malone songs fell out, “Overdose” rose to #47. Obviously, the song must have exploded week-over-week, right? Not really that neither. The song debuted with 7.26 million streams on YouTube in the first week, and then in the second week, it decreased to 6.9 million. (Obviously, YouTube isn’t the only streaming service in the United States; but for NBA YoungBoy, it proves to be one of his strongest.)

Scenario 7—The tracking week

Jenny is a very popular pop singer. Her new single, released on Friday, accumulates a high amount of airplay over the weekend through Sunday. Over 30 million audience impressions, that is. Her song debuts at #100 on the Hot 100 released on Tuesday of that week. But wait, didn’t the song come out after the tracking week for this Hot 100?
It did, but here’s the catch: the airplay tracking week is offset from the sales and streaming tracking week. Here’s a simple rundown:
As you can see, the Hot 100 isn’t a clear-cut 7-day chart. It reflects activity over a 10-day period, with airplay being offset. Therefore, songs released on Friday accumulating massive airplay over the weekend can end up being counted in the ensuing Hot 100 despite not actually being available for the sales and streaming tracking weeks.
The reason why the airplay tracking week is offset is because airplay audience impressions data is estimated real-time data; think of them as TV ratings, but for radio. Also, sales and streaming require time to tabulate and to make sure there are no anomalies in the data.

Scenario 8—The be-all-end-all

Let’s use a real-life example. Billie Eilish’s song “Ocean Eyes”, despite being well-known with millions of streams in the US, peaked at #84 on the Hot 100. That must mean that “Ocean Eyes” isn’t that popular, right? The Hot 100 is the be-all-end-all to determining if a single was popular, right?
Mostly wrong. “Ocean Eyes” being able to accrue tens of millions of streams in the US per year (it went platinum in September 2018) after its January 2016 release is a clear sign that the song is a sleeper hit and continues to gain recognition with music consumers. A sleeper hit is a song that has long-term success without a big start. “Ocean Eyes” is a clear example of this; the song was released to minimal coverage in 2016, but in 2019, it’s become recognisable.
Another example is Don Omar and Lucenzo’s “Danza Kuduro”. This 2011 song peaked at #82 in the United States and only charted for five weeks. Clearly, “Danza Kuduro” wasn’t popular in the United States. But it was. In 2011, the Hot 100 did not count YouTube streaming, which happens to be where “Danza Kuduro” got its popularity from. In May 2013, when the RIAA added streaming to certifications, the song jumped from 1× Platinum to 5× Platinum. Clearly, the song was popular to a degree; the chart’s methodology in 2011 simply didn’t represent the way that it was popular.
So, there are multiple ways that the chart can fail to represent the popularity of a song. In the “Ocean Eyes” scenario, the song simply was a slow-burner and didn’t peak high enough to chart very high on the Hot 100. In the “Danza Kuduro” scenario, the song was popular, it was just popular in a way that the chart methodology hadn’t recognised at the time.

Scenario 9—The predictors

Julien is a person who does chart predictions as a hobby. They post their chart predictions to their Twitter account, which has a large following with pop music fans in the thousands. They also seem to be pretty confident in what they do. Pop music fans take these predictions with minimal questions. The Hot 100 that they’re predicting comes out, and a song’s position on the Hot 100 is multiple spots higher than what Julien had predicted. Fans berate Julien for being inaccurate and berate the artist involved with the song for “payola” among other things.
Okay. Let’s get something straight: Julien along with every other chart predictor of the Hot 100 aren’t industry insiders. They’re laypeople who do chart predictions as a hobby. They’re not getting paid to crunch numbers every week. They also don’t know the numbers. It’s difficult to get things about the Hot 100 correct simply because in the US, all data can only be seen by those with access to Nielsen SoundScan data.
Let’s get another thing straight: not everything is payola. Manipulation of figures has existed since the beginning of the music industry and will probably continue to exist. But with Nielsen SoundScan’s auditing process (which filters out anomalous activity among other things), it’s unlikely that songs’ figures are constantly being manipulated on a regular basis. Trust the system; it’s been in place since 1991.

Scenario 10—The fan activity

A pop group releases a new single. The fans of the pop group commence streaming parties and buying parties in hopes of boosting their favourite artists’ chart position. Some even go as far as to get VPN accounts and stream as Americans. Some stream the song 60 times a day. Does any of this activity have any impact on the Hot 100?
Most likely not. Nielsen SoundScan, the data provider for the Hot 100, has safeguards in place in order to prevent this kind of activity and other ingenuine/abnormal forms of activity from impacting not only the Hot 100, but every other Billboard chart using SoundScan. They do not detail the methods used to prevent this behaviour from happening (most likely in order to avoid any exploitation of the process by external entities). Here are a few instances where they have publicly revealed to the media that they have safeguards in place to prevent this type of activity:
Now, as for gifting, there hasn’t been any direct confirmation that they don’t count for the Hot 100. However, Billboard did reveal in an article about BTS’s first week for their EP “Love Yourself: Her” that gifted albums aren’t reported to SoundScan by Apple, making it very likely that gifted song sales aren’t reported neither.

Scenario 11—The apple and the orange—Case Study: A Tale of Two Hits

Rihanna’s singles “Take a Bow” and “Only Girl (In the World)”. Both spent one week at number one. Both spent 27 weeks on the Hot 100. Clearly, this must mean that they were equal-sized hits, right?
No. This is a case of apples-to-oranges comparisons; different years and different chart conditions render direct comparisons such as these inaccurate.
This is even more true with artists whose careers have spanned multiple decades. There are many factors to take in: potential bias in manual reporting (pre-SoundScan), if any format wasn’t being tracked, what metrics were tracked, as well as chart competition at that time.
That being said, look at these two chart run graphs of Song A and Song B. Which song was the bigger hit?
Now, as a reveal: Song A is “Only Girl (In the World)”, while Song B is “Take a Bow”. Now, you may argue that “Take a Bow” was a bigger hit than “Only Girl” simply because it peaked at #1 quickly and then got close to peaking at #1 again just about two months later in its chart life. But you can also argue that “Only Girl” is the bigger hit because it was very close to having a #1 debut (it debuted early because of an early release) and has had strong recurrent streams. In other words, contemporary hit status doesn’t necessarily equate to recurrent hit status. One can argue that “Only Girl” is more remembered than “Take a Bow”; compare the number of streams between YouTube and Spotify, just to get a general sense. As of the writing of this post, “Only Girl” has 990.2mil streams between YouTube and Spotify, while “Take a Bow” has 754.5mil. Of course, YouTube and Spotify aren’t the only streaming services in the world, but they are both at the top of their fields (video and audio, respectively).
So, what can we learn from this?

End

Alas! This is the end of the post. Or is it a guide? Either way, thank you for spending time noticing this post! I hope this sufficiently debunked quite a few popular misconceptions about the Hot 100 that maybe even you had prior to reading this.

From lastfm
Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band founded in Los Angeles, California in 1985.
The band has released six studio albums: Appetite For Destruction in 1987, G N' R Lies in 1988, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II in 1991, "The Spaghetti Incident?" in 1993 and, after 15 years and with frontman Axl Rose and keyboardist Dizzy Reed being being the only members left from the previous lineup, Chinese Democracy in 2008. They also released three EP's in 1986, 1988, and 1993 and two live albums, in 1999 and 2014.
The group was formed in early 1985 by Hollywood Rose members Axl Rose (vocals) and Izzy Stradlin (rhythm guitar) and L.A. Guns members Tracii Guns (lead guitar), Ole Beich (bass) and Rob Gardner (drums). The band created its name by combining two of the members' names. A short time later, Beich was fired and replaced by Duff McKagan, and Guns was replaced by Slash after not showing up to rehearsal. Slash had played with McKagan in Road Crew and with Stradlin during a short stint in Hollywood Rose. On their first tour (from Sacramento, California to Duff's home town of Seattle), Gardner quit and was replaced by Slash's friend, Steven Adler.
Stemming from the LA rock underground, the ugly lyrics matched the sleaze of the music–driven by heavy blues licks–covering misogyny, violence, city life, sex, liquor, and hard drugs. They also, however, had a tendency to show sensitivity and a desire to break free from the city. Subsequent albums revealed influence from bands in the vein of The Rolling Stones and Queen.
Their 1987 breakthrough, Appetite for Destruction, (18-times platinum and the highest-selling debut album of all-time), coupled with the success of the hit single "Sweet Child O' Mine" in 1988, took the world by storm. "Appetite" was full of raunchy hard rock with blistering, anthemic guitar riffs and snarling vocals.
The followup EP, "G N' R Lies", contained four songs from their debut EP, three new acoustic songs, and an acoustic version of "You're Crazy". The album sold well and got into the top 10 alongside Appetite. By the end of the 1980s, they were one of the most popular bands in the world.
Steven Adler (original drummer) was kicked out of the band due to his drug abuse and replaced by Matt Sorum.
Following the release of G N' R Lies, Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II made history by making the number 1 and 2 spots on the American Billboard Album chart. The albums were filled with songs that pushed Guns into a different direction, far from the Appetite era. They surprised critics who expected hard rock songs but found more "epic" tracks featuring a wider range of instruments (pianos, brass instruments, various effects, etc). The main response was that instead of releasing two albums that included "filler tracks", they could have released one CD.
The band then started a world tour to support the albums. During this tour, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin quit the band due to differences with Slash, Sorum and McKagan due to his newfound sobriety and Stradlin's anger at Rose's management of the band.
They played 192 shows in the 28-month tour, which set attendance records and concluded with a show in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on July 17, 1993. This show marked the last time original members Slash and McKagan and newcomers Clarke and Sorum would play a live show with Rose.
Axl began work on a new album of original material in 1993. In 1994, Gilby Clarke left the band, and was replaced with Paul Tobias. That same year, the band recorded a cover version of The Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" for the movie Interview with the Vampire. According to Slash's 2007 autobiography, the first version of guitar track was rejected by Axl, who wanted Slash to copy Keith Richards' playing on the original. Reluctantly, Slash agreed and recorded another version closer to the original. Slash was further infuriated when he discovered Tobias' guitar copying his own solo note by note layered in the final mix of the song. This would be the last recording by the original version of the band, and five years would go by before any new material came out under the Guns N' Roses name.
Slash drifted in and out of the band for the next couple of years, beginning a side project called Slash's Snakepit. In August 1996, GN'R returned to the studio, even though McKagan and Sorum were simultaneously touring with their side project, Neurotic Outsiders. Eventually, only Slash and Rose were left to continue working. During this period, Slash commented in an interview, "My relationship with Axl right now is sort of at a stand still." Additionally, Axl had approached guitarist Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne, Black Label Society) about jamming and possibly joining Guns N' Roses.
In 1996 and 1997, Slash, Sorum and McKagan all left the band, leaving Rose as the only remaining charter member of the band. The three later formed rock supergroup Velvet Revolver with former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland and guitarist Dave Kushner.
In 1998, a "clean" (i.e., profanity removed) version of Use Your Illusionwas released (in the USA only), mainly so the album could be sold in Wal-Mart and K-Mart stores. The album, titled "Use Your Illusion" was a 1 CD compilation of the 2 albums.
Also in 1998, Axl put a new version of the band together and returned to the studio. This version of the band has been touring and recording sporadically ever since. The new band's membership has changed frequently, but its core members have included guitarist Robin Finck, effects man Chris Pitman, bassist Tommy Stinson (formerly of The Replacements)— as well as Paul Tobias, drummer Josh Freese and longtime GN'R keyboardist Dizzy Reed.
In 1999, the band released one new song, "Oh My God", on the soundtrack of the film End of Days. The track featured additional guitar work by Dave Navarro and Gary Sunshine, Rose's personal guitar teacher. The song's release was intended to be a prelude to their new album, now officially entitled Chinese Democracy. Geffen also released Live Era '87-'93, a collection of live performances from various concerts during the Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion tours. Also in 1999, during an interview with Kurt Loder for MTV, Axl said that he had re-recorded Appetite for Destruction with the new band, replacing two songs with "Patience" and "You Could Be Mine".
In 1999, guitarist Robin Finck departed the band in order to rejoin his former band, Nine Inch Nails, on tour. In 2000, virtuoso guitarist Buckethead joined Guns N' Roses as a replacement for Finck. Josh Freese was replaced with Bryan "Brain" Mantia (formerly of Primus). Robin Finck returned to Guns N' Roses in late 2000 to complement Buckethead on lead guitar.
The revised lineup finally made a public appearance in January 2001 with two well-received concerts, one in Las Vegas and one at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio de Janeiro. The band played a mixture of old hits and new songs from their forthcoming album.
The new lineup played a further two shows in Las Vegas at the end of 2001. In 2002, rhythm guitarist Paul Tobias left the band because of his frustrations with life on the road. He was replaced by Richard Fortus(formerly of The Psychedelic Furs and Love Spit Love). The band then played several shows in August 2002, headlining festivals and concerts throughout Asia and Europe. They made their way to New York for a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in September.
In 2002, the band's first North American tour since 1993 was organized to support Chinese Democracy. However, the opening show in Vancouver was canceled by the venue when Rose arrived late due to his plane being held up by bad weather conditions at Los Angeles airport. A riot ensued. This tour was met with mixed results. Some concerts did not sell well, while shows in larger markets such as New York sold out in minutes. Due to a second riot by fans in Philadelphia, tour promoter Clear Channel canceled the remainder of the tour.
The band went on hiatus until they were scheduled to play at Rock in Rio IV in May 2004. However, Buckethead left the band in March of that year, causing them to cancel. Also in March 2004, Geffen released Guns N' Roses' Greatest Hits, since Rose had failed to deliver a new studio album in more than 10 years. Rose expressed displeasure with this album as its track listing was established without his consent and went as far as trying to block its release by suing Geffen. This failed, however, and the album went triple platinum in the USA.
In February 2006, demos of the songs "Better", "Catcher in the Rye", "I.R.S." and "There Was a Time" were leaked through a fan site. The band's management requested that all links to the MP3 files and all lyrics to the songs be removed from forums and web sites. Despite this, radio stations began adding "I.R.S." to playlists, and the song reached #49 on the Radio & Records Active Rock National Airplay chart in the final week of February - the first time an internet leak had done so.
On May 5, 2006, Axl appeared on the Friday Night Rocks with Eddie Trunk radio show (during an interview with ex-Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach) and said the new Guns N' Roses album would be released before the end of the year. Later in May, the band launched a European tour, headlining both the Download Festival and Rock In Rio - Lisbon. Four warm-up shows preceded the tour at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City and became the band's first live concert dates since the aborted 2002 tour. The shows also marked the debut of virtuoso guitarist and composer Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, replacing Buckethead. During the tour, Bach and Izzy Stradlin made frequent guest appearances. By the tour's end in 2007, the band had played to over 750 000 people in over 23 countries.
On April 5, 2008, a picture of Finck appeared on Nine Inch Nails web page under the title "Welcome Back!" starting the rumor of his possible reunion with Trent Reznor. On April 11, Finck expressed his happiness on playing again with NIN. On April 20, on Guns N' Roses' web site, Axl expressed surprise about the news.
Chinese Democracy had been given the tentative release date of March 6, then reported September 17, 2007. However, both dates passed with no sign of the album. After further release dates were discussed, the album finally came out on November 23, 2008.
Slash, McKagan and Sorum still played together in Velvet Revolver. However, Izzy Stradlin, original GN'R rhythm guitarist and co-composer of many of the band's most successful songs, has not joined them. He did however play a few dates as a guest with GN'R in the summer of 2006. Keyboard player Dizzy Reed, while not a founding member of the band (joining in 1990 in the Use Your Illusion period), remained in the previous lineup. in 2014, Bassist Tommy Stinson had previous commitments to The Replacements, leading former bassist Duff McKagan to fill in. After the 2014 tour, bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarists DJ Ashba & Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, and keyboardist Chris Pitman all left the band.
Slash and McKagan rejoined in 2016, as did keyboardist Melissa Reese, as the group embarked on the "Not in This Lifetime…" stadium tour. The tour also featured several guest appearances, including from former drummer Steven Adler, AC/DC guitarist Angus Young, former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach, and Rose Tattoo singer Angry Anderson.
GN'R's current lineup includes Rose (lead vocals), McKagan (bass), Fortus (rhythm guitar), Slash (lead guitar), Melissa Reese (synth & programming), Frank Ferrer (drums) and Reed (keyboard and percussion).

2019.03.14 06:20 MaliciousMal "Friend" years ago asked me to setup his MP3 with songs

Not really sure how to go about this but this was about 10-11 years ago. I was fresh out of High School and hanging with a girl I was dating at the time.
A guy I had known and been friends with for the past 4-5 years had messaged me one night asking me to download more songs for his MP3 player (this was before the time of iPods, we lived in the ghetto, no one had anything Apple related) and I told him I can't at the moment, I was busy and that if he wanted me to I would have to start charging him because I had already gotten this guy over 100 songs all just so that he could listen to it with the girls he'd flirt with. This guy was a damn Casanova with women somehow, all the girls in our town loved him and despite being in the ghetto he would always buy himself the expensive clothing from the mall so I figured why not have him pay like $5 for once. He didn't like that and decided to go off on me.
(Please note this is just summed up and not 100% entirely accurate, this was like 10 years ago)
Me: Sorry man, but I'm gonna have to charge you like $5 for all that, I can't do this for free anymore.
Him: What? You've gotta be fucking kidding me man. Fuck you! You're a fucking loser bro. After everything I've done for your ungrateful ass?
Me: Excuse me? I've literally given you a ton of songs for free as a friendly gesture dude, the fuck is your problem? You should be happy I don't have you pay me back for everything else.
Him: Fuck you dude, you're a piece of shit. I don't owe you shit dumb ass, if anything you fucking owe me!
Me: Hold up, I've literally been buying you food for over a year, every day after school we'd go eat Chinese and you want to talk shit? Not to mention I've been hooking you up for free with songs for the longest time! You're a piece of shit dude.
Him: Fuck you, I hope you die man. You are a piece of shit and I hope you die.

Fast forward to about 4 years ago (so like 6 years after this happened) and I see him at my front door asking for me. I've not talked to nor seen him for over 6 years and he's come up to my door to ask for a ride to his work. He said he'd pay me $20 just to give him a ride, I had work later that day and I had just gotten home about 5 hours earlier from work but I said fuck it, that's $20 I could use for bills. I take him to his job and he says his money isn't there and he had to check his schedule. Then he asks me to take him to another part of town to get his keys to his house from his "mom's boyfriend", so I do it and he comes back saying the guy doesn't have it to go to another part of town where his "sister is staying with her boyfriend" and he names a guy we went to school with (his sister was like 8+ years younger than us). I eventually just drop him off at the place he said he worked and head back home. I later learned he is now a homeless druggy who begs for $$ on the street - he still hasn't changed his ways for being a beggar. Last time I saw him was outside a Walgreen's (drug store) "waiting for a ride" (he was actually walking up to people asking for $$). I've still never seen that money to this day and I've not seen him since.
I find it funny though, from our time together as teens, he was always a ladies man and a smooth talker - able to get anyone to do anything for him. Now he tries to scam people and rob them. I later found out from some other friends that he had actually done the same to them - he begged for free things from them and when he got them, he wanted more but when they declined he went off on them too. Choose your friends carefully.

2018.12.30 21:04 user669103 WHAT VIDEO/SONG WAS IT???????

Okay so i lost all hopes completely and decided that the only place that could help me is reddit. So here's a little backstory.
So I was a kid back in 2006/2008 and we did not have internet connection. Obviously we would download songs from some shops and shit like that. But never mind here's the real thing. So my uncle got this MP3/MP4 portable game player the one in red color with Sony written on them with 2mP camera and a screen in center. Just like a PSP but knock off like small in shape and shit.
I couldn't post an image but I'll see if I could show it.
So anyways, In the videos section of this device was a Japanese or Chinese song I don't remembeknow the exact language. This song as what I recall had Michelle Yeoh(the actress) in it I think.
A little bit of what i recall is multiple actresses wearing white gown and singing by the clouds and some rivers. This scene and some part of the lyric is still stuck in my head.
Help. Me REDDIT CRACKING THIS CASE. I'LL OWE IT TO ALL OF YAWLL. PLEASE.

2018.12.30 20:24 Sorezoreni Is there any convenient way to listen to Chinese/Japanese/Korean music in North America?

I'm literally resorting to the stone-age method of downloading individual songs as mp3's right now if I wanna listen to the latest C/J/K music on my phone.
Anyone know of a better method?

2018.07.08 17:40 Alokjnv10 I want to build a Spotify like music service.

Spotify like music service with features of free streaming and mp3 download. with large genre. Not limited to English songs but Kpop (korean), Jpop, Indian, Chinese, Mexican and nearly every genre with the help of streaming sites popular on the respective country. Like india have gaana.com chinese have tencent music. Korea have JYP entertainment etc. So i am looking for a buddy who have knowledge of HTML, css and JavaScript. I am looking for a buddy who have working knowledge of these technologies and he may not be very experienced. It's fine. If we can't write a program with our mind. we always have Google. I have good knowledge of android and firebase. It's not a side project for fun but a business idea to earn some money. We are business partners.

2018.03.31 17:08 illumination10 Spotify for Chinese (and English) Music?

Hey all,
Aware that this has kinda been asked previously, but I can no longer reply and I'd like to be a little bit more specific with what I'm after.
I'm looking for an app that is basically like Spotify but for Chinese Music. Ideally, I'd like just one app so I can have all my Chinese and English music all together. My wishlist of features for this app is the ability to:
I know some people recommend Xiami 虾米, Netease Music, and QQ Music. However, my issue with all of these is unlike Spotify, AFAIK it is not possible to save music for offline music without manually downloading everything as mp3s one by one - and this means a large element of convenience is not there. If I'm not mistaken, there are also some songs (both English and Chinese) on the 虾米 app that aren't there due to copyright reasons.
For example 周杰伦 - 搁浅 can only have the music video viewed but the audio of the song can't be saved to a playlist? It's little things like that..!
Spotify would be great - but when it comes to Chinese music, it really only has the really famous and mainstream artists/songs.
Hope someone has some advice!

2017.09.30 16:23 meishitero Music download solution

I'm no longer living in China. I just got apple music and am finding it difficult to find some versions of Chinese songs - for example, where a band performs both in Cantonese and Mandarin, I can only find the Cantonese version of a song. I can't find any version of a couple really well known songs.
I realize the libraries of content are different based on your apple ID - I do have a Chinese one that I've used in the past but the music libraries stay only with that ID and I don't want to lose all my music switching between the two.
Things I've tried:
So, being outside the country, how do I get access to a Chinese music catalogue where either I can download and access the .mp3 files, or somehow directly access the files in apple music?

2017.04.11 07:57 toasterberry 5+ Hour osu! Mix Round 2!

EDIT: The song gathering stage is for the most part coming to an end, I'm doing a complete scroll through of all of my osu songs to 100% make sure I did not miss anything vital. If you still have a song you want to see on here, leave your comments now! I'm already gathering the MP3s for the mix!! This is going to take a little longer than gathering the list, because not all of the MP3s in osu are to the quality I want them. I want to have most songs at least in full 320kbps (or v0) quality. I say "most" because I know some songs don't exist in that quality, sadly.
If I said I've added yours and it's not here, be sure to let me know, reddit seems to give me issues if I update my post too fast or something.
If you have already commented some suggestions and want to add more, please add it as a reply or new comment, because I don't get notified when someone edits their comment, only when someone posts a new comment or reply.
EDIT: If you have a proper 320 MP3 (NOT download with a youtube/soundcloud downloader) to any MP3 I have labeled lower, PLEASE comment or message me so I can get it. I want this mix to be as best quality as possible.
1 ░ = Proper MP3 or audio file was never released.
2 ░ = Higher quality MP3 is available but only for purchase, and nobody has shared it on the internet.
3 ░ = I ripped the OP or ED from the anime myself since no OST seems to exists or it's only physical CD.
Last updated 5/26/17 11:31 PM. Total of 85 MP3s. Length = 06:15:14
